Shattered Illusions Love Lies and Redemption (Lizetta and Remington) novel Chapter 1342

Fiona turned back and shot him a glare, prompting Nathan to force a somewhat stiff smile.

"Remington and Joy both need looking after. You've been working hard these past couple of days."

Lizetta hadn't expected him to speak to her in such a pleasant tone, let alone offer words that sounded so much like a concession or a plea for peace.

She was genuinely surprised, but she didn't feel much else.

Even though Nathan had never thought highly of her, he had never done anything crossing the line, either.

He was Remington's father. Despite the severe tension between them, they weren't sworn enemies.

Since Nathan was willing to be civil now, Lizetta didn't demand any apologies or grand gestures. Treating him with the polite distance of a distant relative wasn't too difficult.

After all, with Joy in the picture, there was still a long life ahead, and avoiding him forever was impossible.

So, she replied politely, "It hasn't been hard at all. Joy is very well-behaved, and Remington is considerate enough that he hasn't let me lift a finger."

Fiona, however, gave Nathan another look of disdain.

"What's the point of just saying she's working hard? I haven't seen you do a single practical thing as a grandfather or a father."

Nathan opened his mouth, clearly wanting to defend himself.

But Lizetta had no desire to receive any "practical" rewards or compensations from Nathan.

Besides, his forced, reluctant posture was entirely unappealing.

Lizetta immediately linked her arm through Fiona's, smoothly changing the subject with a bright smile.

"Joy just had his milk, so he's full of energy right now. I told him his great-grandmother was coming to see him, and the little guy seemed to understand. When I left the room, he was staring eagerly at the door."

Joseph ran up to Lizetta's side, and she immediately turned her head with a smile, chatting happily with him.

Nathan watched the three of them walking ahead, laughing and talking in perfect harmony, deliberately leaving him entirely excluded.

For a moment, a profound sense of sorrow washed over him. He truly felt like a man utterly alone, as if he had aged several years in a single instant, his heart heavy with a bleak, overwhelming regret.

Lizetta escorted Fiona and the others into the ward. Joy was lying on his stomach on the hospital bed, crawling forward to grab whatever Remington was holding.

Remington was clearly teasing his son with a wicked sense of amusement.

Just as Joy was about to grab the little toy car in his hand, Remington would snatch it away and move it somewhere else.

Joy was like a little donkey chasing a carrot on a stick, being relentlessly paraded around the bed by his childish, shameless father. Within moments, the baby was exhausted, his little face flushed red.

Fiona's heart ached at the sight. Before she could even say a word, Nathan frowned, marched over quickly, scooped Joy up into his arms, snatched the toy car from Remington, and stuffed it directly into his grandson's hands.
