Kimberley could tell Jerome truly adored Candy, and she believed he would be a wonderful father. She was genuinely happy for her daughter.
But Lizetta's comment about Jerome becoming a 'slave to his wife' brought back that fluttering, bitter feeling. With a slightly strained smile, she said.
"He... he only married me because I'm Candy's mother. We..."
Before Kimberley could finish, Lizetta cut her off.
"Kim, how could you think that? Jerome is a man of strong principles and a deep sense of responsibility. If he didn't have feelings for you, he would just do his absolute best to be a good father to Candy. Plenty of people co-parent without being married these days. He really didn't need to marry you. The fact that he wanted to means he cares for you. He knows he can give you happiness and is emotionally committed to you. That's why he did it."
Kimberley was stunned. Was that really true?
Did Jerome...
Did he really have romantic feelings for her, and that was why he was willing to get married?
How could that be?
After years of unrequited love, her instinct was to deny it, but Lizetta sounded so certain.
"Kim, an outsider sees things clearly. Jerome absolutely, definitely likes you. If you don't believe me, just look at him."
Lizetta spoke with absolute conviction. Hearing this, Kimberley turned her head once more to look at Jerome.
To her surprise, Jerome had turned his head and was looking right back at her. Their eyes met, and Kimberley's heart seized.
She blinked, thinking she was mistaken and that he was actually looking at Lizetta beside her.
But no matter how many times she blinked, his gaze remained locked on hers. Sitting in the sunlight, his handsome face carried a faint, almost imperceptible smile, radiating a gentle, romantic charm.
Was that really meant for her? Kimberley's face instantly flushed red.

Does evil really triumph always above the good in this novel ? How comes Stella's evilness has no end? Does the author believes that by giving justice and importance to bad people like Stella will make this novel interesring? I am starting to lose my patience and ask when will the writer finally will realize that the protagonist is Lizetta and not Stella....
