Unable to pay the mortgage, Swain's apartment was foreclosed by the bank. Without a job and completely out of options, staying in Metropia would only guarantee him a life on the streets.
Filled with agonizing regret, he packed whatever he had left and slunk back to his rural hometown in absolute disgrace.
As for Molly, the second she realized the money was truly gone, she signed the divorce papers without a second thought. She headed straight back to the nightclubs, disappearing into the neon-lit underbelly of the city.
...
The day Helena arrived at the Lonsdale estate, the butler opened the door.
Almost instantly, a little girl dashed over and tackled her legs. "Aunt Helena!" she cheered, her eyes shining brightly.
"Gigi! Manners!" Giselle Turner hurried over from the hall, scooping the child into her arms before smiling warmly at the couple. "Morris, Helena. You're here."
"It's perfectly fine, she's adorable." Helena had come prepared, pulling out a nicely wrapped toy for the little girl. "This is for you."
"Thank you!" Gigi politely accepted the gift.
Forrest Lonsdale was sitting on the sofa, reading the newspaper. Seeing his younger brother walk in with Helena, he neatly folded the paper and offered a brief, polite greeting.
Grandpa Gordon and Grandma Marcella warmly invited Helena to sit down. Marcella handed her a sweet, warm drink. "Oh, you're so thin, sweetheart. Morris, you really need to make sure she's eating well."
"I know," Morris replied with a soft smile.
Before Helena could take a sip, Gigi sneaked a piece of candy into her hand. "Candy for Auntie!"
Helena was genuinely touched. She had never known what a healthy, functioning family looked like. Yet here, in the home of one of the wealthiest and most powerful families in the country, she felt a profound, welcoming warmth.
She had mentally prepared herself for the worst. She expected the backhanded compliments and passive-aggressive interrogations she had seen in movies about elite families. But there was none of that. It was entirely natural—so natural that she found her defenses melting away, leaving her incredibly relaxed.
Gordon asked a few basic questions about her background, and Helena answered honestly, hiding nothing. The old man wasn't upset in the slightest. In fact, he looked irritated on her behalf. "Things are already so tough for young people these days, and your folks still play favorites with the boys? What era do they think we're living in? Unbelievable."
"It’s a blessing that Helena is such a remarkable young woman, and even more of a blessing that Morris found her. Otherwise, it would have been a tragedy," Marcella chimed in. "You two just focus on building a beautiful life together. Try to give us a baby soon, just like Hank."
Helena offered a gentle smile and glanced sideways at Morris. He leaned in and whispered, "I told you. There's nothing to worry about."
A little while later, Lucian and Loyce came downstairs after putting their son to bed.
Seeing Loyce, Helena instinctively felt a sense of respect, almost like greeting an elder. She stood up. "Ms. Lonsdale."
"We're family now. Just call me Loyce," she said, waving a hand dismissively.
Helena's eyes softened, and she nodded.
The atmosphere at the dinner table was lively and harmonious.
