The moment she heard Lyle’s name, Hester flinched so hard it was like someone had struck her with a jolt of electricity.
Before she could even utter a word, Lyle was already behind her. He seized her without a hint of hesitation, ignoring her screams, and hurled her straight into a large metal barrel.
The barrel was round and massive—big enough to hold three grown adults. Lyle didn’t waste a second; he forced her head underwater again and again, holding her down until her lungs felt like they might burst.
The suffocating lack of oxygen, the panic of drowning—it shattered her mind long before her body gave out. When Lyle finally yanked her head up for a gasp of air, it barely registered; the world spun, and breathing felt impossible.
Two other bodyguards fished her out, this time with ruthless efficiency.
They hauled her up. Dragged her across the floor. Not a scrap of pity in any of them.
Lyle looked like he wanted nothing more than to end her right then and there. After all, this woman wasn’t just cruel and calculating—she’d played them all for fools. Lie after lie, sending their investigations in circles. One false lead from her could derail their entire search.
She was, in Lyle’s eyes, even more despicable than Yosef.
Did she really think Ms. Sutton—sharp as a tack—could be fooled by her pathetic tricks?
When Hester’s limp body was finally dumped at Sabrina’s feet, she drew ragged, desperate breaths. For several seconds she just lay there, crumpled and shaking.
Then, trembling from head to toe, tears and snot streaking her face, she broke down completely. “Sabrina, I’m sorry! Please—I’ll talk, I’ll tell you everything, just don’t put me back in the water… I can’t—I can’t take it—don’t drown me again…”
She choked out those last few words over and over, her voice only faltering when Lyle barked, “Spit it out!”
“I’ll talk, I’ll talk…”
