She's Too Busy Winning to Watch Him Cry novel Chapter 731

When Pip was just four months old, the dreaded two-month fuss hit. Since he was premature, even his fussy phase had been delayed.

He woke up every hour or two during the night, bursting into tears the second he was set down. Rowan took over the night shifts. He slept shirtless, letting Pip lie on his warm chest. The baby would rest his little face against Rowan's rising and falling chest while Lyra slept soundly beside them. But because Rowan had to work the next day, Lyra became the primary caregiver during the day.

During the day, Lyra held him until her arms went numb. The moment she handed him over to the nanny, the little guy would squirm like a madman. It was as if he knew someone else was holding him even with his eyes closed, and he would wail relentlessly for no reason at all. No one but Lyra was allowed to hold him; even Andrea Nash got the screaming treatment.

It made Lyra want to cry, too.

"When is Rowan coming back?"

She found herself desperately missing him. Her loose bun was half-undone as she gently lowered the baby onto the mattress. But the second Pip touched the bed, his tiny limbs flailed, and his frail, endless crying started all over again. The sound made her heart clench.

Just as the maid stepped out to call her boss, Rowan walked through the door, home early.

He entered the room to find Lyra kneeling on the mattress, trying to coax their son. Her hands were planted on either side of the baby, her hips in the air. A few soft, dark strands of hair stuck to the side of her luminous neck. Her white nightgown was a wrinkled mess, riding up to reveal her bare, slender legs.

Rowan chuckled.

"That's a great position," he said, taking off his suit jacket as he walked over. "How come you never want to do this when it's just the two of us? You always say it feels like a dog..."

Lyra looked up just in time to see his large hand reach out and playfully swat her rear.

Her face flushed crimson as she glared at him. "You're still in the mood to joke? Clearly, you haven't been tortured enough by this little monster. Pick him up already, or I swear I'll..."

"Or what? Are you going to cry for me, too?" Rowan gently pinched his wife's radiant cheek, leaning down to speak in a soothing tone. "We already have one crybaby in the house. Please don't give me another."

Seeing his predatory, teasing gaze, Lyra panicked and rolled to the other side of the bed, wrapping herself up in the sheets like a cocoon until even her head was hidden.

Rowan didn't mind. He scooped up a sniffling Pip and rocked him gently, teasing the baby with endless patience. "Look at what you're doing to your poor mother. You're exhausting her, you little brat."

The moment Pip settled into his father's arms, his cries faded. He let out a few soft hiccups, resting his little head against Rowan's chest while his tiny hand gripped the edge of Rowan's shirt. Rowan turned back to his wife. "He's just feeling insecure. I asked the doctor about it, and he said it'll pass in time. We just have to be patient with him."

Lyra already knew that without him having to say it.

Rowan continued to tease her. "See? He stopped crying as soon as I held him. He knows I love him the most in the world."

Lyra tugged the sheets down just enough to reveal her face, refusing to be outdone. "I'm the one who loves him the most."

"You do, of course you do." Rowan let out a deep chuckle. Balancing Pip in one arm, he used his free hand to tip her chin up. He leaned in and kissed her lips with an undeniable heat. "Get some rest. I'll take him outside."

Rowan carried the baby out of the bedroom and closed the door quietly, leaving her in peace to sleep.

Downstairs in the main hall, Rowan made a point to instruct the staff. His wife was due for her period soon, and the next few days were going to be rough. He told them to pay extra attention to her diet and help her as much as possible. Still, Pip's two-month fuss was completely irrational. No one else could soothe him, and Rowan knew it.
