Chapter 6
Young Madam, the Young Master is still upset right now.”
I glanced over at Crane on the balcony, cigarette in hand, looking like he was ready to throw someone off the roof.
The “don’t even think about coming near me” vibes were radiating off him in waves.
“Ow–that hurts!”
“Good. Maybe it’ll teach you to actually call for backup instead of letting people walk all over you. What are you, a punching bag?”
My eyes started burning. After the humiliation I’d just been through, I was already barely holding it together. Hearing his words now, the tears just spilled over before I could stop them.
That completely freaked him out.
In all the time he’d known me–especially this past year living together–he’d never seen me cry. He straight–up panicked.
“Shit, I’m sorry–I didn’t mean it like that. Here, hit me back if you want. Just please don’t cry.”
See? This is why younger guys are where it’s at. One sweet line and I’m already feeling better.
Why didn’t you tell them you’re married to me? What, I’m not good enough to claim in public?”
“Pretty sure I should be asking you that.”
Crane knew exactly what I was worth. Daniel was just too stupid to see it. From day one, Crane knew I was different. Only problem? I was Daniel’s girlfriend back then. He couldn’t make a move.
He’d spent months burying those feelings. Then at my ninth failed wedding, I said one sentence that dragged everything right back to the
surface.
Honestly, I was mostly just messing with Daniel’s whole crew that day. They’d spent years treating me like garbage–figured I’d earned the right to screw with them a little.
I didn’t think Crane would actually take me seriously. But that same night? He showed up at my door.
“I’m his best friend. I should be the one making it up to you.”
I thought he was joking. So I played along.
“I mean, I’m not opposed to reparations. But let’s see what I’m working with first. I’m too old for some slow–burn romance bullshit.”
Let’s just say he more than delivered that night. Completely rocked my world. So yeah, I decided to keep him around.
Except he wasn’t satisfied with casual. Said it was his first time, so we had to make it official. That’s how we ended up at the courthouse the next week
We didn’t announce it afterward, but we weren’t hiding either. His friends were all terrified of crossing Crane, so they kept quiet. Just started tiptoeing around Daniel and Lucy, trying not to start World War III.
“I tried telling them. But every time I got to the good part, Lucy would interrupt and derail the whole thing. You know how she operates. So I gave up. They’ll figure it out eventually.”

Chapter 6
He thought I was embarrassed about being with him. That’s why he’d kept his mouth shut earlier.
Crane knew Lucy was a professional shit–stirrer. But hearing I wasn’t trying to hide our marriage? Instant mood boost.
“Go schmooze with your guests. I’m fine up here.”
I looked like I’d been through a blender. No way was I going back down there. I’d earned a break.
“Alright. But don’t go anywhere.”
He’s only two years younger than me, but sometimes acts like a horny college kid. Every time we’re alone, he can’t keep his hands–or lips–to
himself.
“We’ll pick this up tonight. And you’re not tapping out early this time.”
“You’re ridiculous. Get out of here.”
The second he left, my phone lit up.
Daniel.
“Where are you? I’m coming to get you.”
