Chapter 102

Chapter 102

Ivan sat in the conference room, suddenly feeling a chill run down his spine for no reason.

“What’s wrong, Mr. Walton? Is the AC on too high?” an employee from Harris Group asked.

Ivan shook his head and said, “Oh, no. I’m not that fragile.”

He had no idea he’d just made it onto someone’s hit list.

Whitney went to the bathroom, only to run into that person she really wished she could avoid again.

George’s brows furrowed as he spoke in a low, serious tone, “You came again, huh, Whitney?”

‘Again? What do you mean?’ Whitney wondered.

Whitney put on a polite but distant smile and said, “Nice to see you, Mr. Harris.”

Calling him “Mr. Harris” wasn’t really accurate anymore. With their new family ties, she could technically just call him George now.

Sure, the age difference was a little off, but ever since she married Klein, her seniority in the family had skyrocketed.

A flicker of disdain crossed George’s eyes. “Are you here to see Klein?” he asked.

Whitney said with a faint smile, “No, I’m just here with my fellow lawyer to handle some business.”

“I see.” George kept his face serious, but his smile was meaningful. “Whitney, I didn’t know you had such big ambitions.”

Whitney froze, dropping the polite act.

Her eyes grew cold and she said, “Why don’t you say that straight to Klein?”

George said with a sneer, “He just married you, so you’re still fresh and exciting to him. Of course he’s got your back right now.”

“But Whitney, let’s be honest. There’s a real difference between you two. How long do you think a man’s interest will last?”

Whitney stayed calm and said, “Mr. Harris, Klein is your brother. Isn’t it a bit much to badmouth him like this?”

“Even if it doesn’t last, it’ll still beat your son,” Whitney retorted, her tone icy cold.

George’s faint smile vanished, replaced by a cold, hard look.

“Confident, aren’t you?” George sneered. “But let me warn you. Throwing away your own happiness just to get back at my son… is that really worth it?”

Whitney didn’t bother denying it. She just said with a sneer, “Whether it’s worth it or not, that’s for me to decide.”

Neither of them bothered to say more. The conversation ended.

‘Seems I really underestimated this woman, George thought.

Neither of them noticed the tall figure lurking in the shadows.

Klein, holding the agreement in his hand, turned and headed back to his office.

Calvin had just finished a call when he turned around and realized Klein was nowhere to be seen.

He called Klein, “Mr. Harris, where are you?”

“I’ll check the agreement later. Got something else to deal with. Just tell them to go back.” Klein replied.

Calvin had thought Klein would be dying to see his wife, but just like that, he changed his mind.

‘I guess no one can ever guess what Mr. Harris is thinking,’ Calvin thought.

Calvin walked back into the conference room with a friendly grin and said, “Sorry, Mr. Harris is caught up with something right now. Once he’s looked over the agreement, I’ll let you know and we’ll handle the rest of the process. Thanks for today. everyone.”

Whitney closed her laptop and started packing up to head back to the firm.

They headed for the elevator together, but Ivan realized he’d left something behind, so he told Whitney to go ahead and wait for him in the parking lot.

Whitney watched as the elevator doors slid open and it was empty. She was about to wait for Ivan, but then, out of nowhere someone in a pair of polished black leather shoes strode in with confidence.

She glanced up, her eyes narrowing. It was Klein, his face regal and cold.

“Calvin followed him in, pressing the button for the fifth floor. Klein didn’t even bother with the controls.

Today, Klein had that cold, untouchable look all over his face. He didn’t spare her a single glance.

Whitney’s heart tightened. ‘Is he acting like this because Calvin’s here? Trying to avoid any gossip?’ she wondered.

The sudden chill from Klein made Whitney a little uncomfortable, but she still greeted them politely, “Hello, Mr. Harris,

Calvin.”

Klein’s voice was cold and distant as he simply replied, “Hello.”

Whitney knew better than to push her luck, so she quietly moved to the corner of the elevator.

Waiting for Ivan was out of the question now.

Her stare was dead serious, glued to the changing numbers on the elevator panel.

Calvin had been thinking about making small talk with Whitney, but since Klein wasn’t saying a word, he figured it was be to keep quiet too.

The awkward silence stretched on until the elevator hit the thirteenth floor. Suddenly, there was a loud bang and the elevator jolted.

Then the lights went out completely, plunging them into total darkness.

Calvin frowned, confused, “What the hell? Did the power go out?”

He pulled out his phone to call the admin department, while Klein immediately turned to check on Whitney.

In the faint glow of his phone, he saw Whitney huddled up on the floor, looking so small and vulnerable.

Suddenly, his heart softened.

He strode over and crouched down beside her. “Don’t be scared. It’s just a power outage.” he said.

But his words didn’t soothe her at all. As he cradled her head in his hand, he could feel her trembling

Klein had meant to stay mad, but he realized he just couldn’t stay angry at her for long.

Klein pulled her into his arms, his deep voice murmuring right by her ear. “I’m here. Don’t be afraid

As soon as he finished it, the elevator lights came back on.

“Mr. Harris, the engineering team just activated the emergency system. We’re heading straight to the first floor… Calvin said,

But before he could finish, he saw Klein and Whitney in the corner, holding each other close.
