Chapter 140

Emily had been abroad for three days. The only contact she’d had with Carter was a phone call right after her plane land

After that, there was complete radio silence for the next three days.

Tears welled up in Emily’s eyes. ‘He’s so heartless, she thought.

“Tina, how are things back home?” Emily asked, her volse tinged with worry.

Emily had to rely on her only informant back home.

Tina was in a foul mood and said, “Emily, I’m really not okay! You have no idea how twisted Whitney is. She’s actually ma my mom and dad get a divorce!”,

Emily was taken aback. ‘When did Whitney get so extreme?’ she wondered.

“So, your parents got divorced?” Emily asked, her voice full of disbelief.

“Yeah!” Tina took a sip of her drink in frustration. “My dad’s totally under her spell! He believes everything Whitney says. she told him to jump off a cliff, I bet he’d do it!”

It’s driving me crazy!” Tina added, her voice full of exasperation.

Emily’s eyes narrowed. “Your mom’s just going to let this slide?” she said.

‘No way!” Tina exclaimed.

Tina bit her tongue, remembering her mother’s warning, and didn’t say anything else.

Emily, are you really okay over there? When are you coming back? I miss you so much,” Tina said, a little whiny.

Tina secretly cursed her, ‘She’s so useless.’

She just got back and got kicked out again. Emily’s even more hopeless than I am, Tina thought, rolling her eyes.

I miss you too. If you get a chance, come visit me and I’ll take you skiing,” Emily replied.

Neither of them was really in the mood, so they just hung up.

Emily knew her mother wasn’t someone one could push around. There was no way she’d just take it lying down over and

over.

If Laura could step up and deal with Whitney for her.

“That would be great, she thought with a sinister smile

The next day at the law firm, Valerie couldn’t wait to tell Whitney all about how Gima looked after she left, like she’d just eaten something nasty

“That was so satisfying!” Valerie laughed, her eyes sparkling Whitney, it’s like you’re the main character in a feel-good

novel!”

Whitney just smiled

Honestly, she didn’t care about the drama. She just hoped Gina would leave her alone from now on.

Later that afternoon, Whitney checked her phone and saw a message from April.

[Ms. Moore, Laura stopped by Moore Manor today. She came for me.]

Looks like she took the bait, Whitney thought, a sly grin on her face.

Whitney waited another two days before finally going to pick up her car.

The dealership staff said with a polite smile, “Ms. Moore, give it a quick look if you want.”

Whitney glanced over the car casually and said, “It’s fine. I’m a regular here. No need to check.”

She got in and, as she headed out, called Marco to meet her at the mall.

Whitney was driving like any other day when a huge truck suddenly cut in front of her. She tried to hit the brakes, but the weren’t working at all. Panicking, she jerked the wheel as hard as she could, and the red car slammed straight into a tree b the side of the road.

In no time, the front of the car crumpled, and thick black smoke started billowing out.

Marco had just parked his car when he saw a car crash at the intersection. The red car looked oddly familiar.

“Wait, it looks like Mrs. Harris’s car!’ Marco thought, his heart skipping a beat.

By the time Marco rushed over, two passersby had called 911.

And the woman being pulled out of the driver’s seat by the crowd was Whitney.

‘Mrs. Harris!” Marco yelled, his heart nearly leaping out of his throat in shock.

‘Mrs. Harris, can you hear me?” he called, his voice shaking with panic.

Whitney’s face was pale as paper, blood trickling down her forehead. She was totally unconscious.

Marco’s hands were shaking as he called Klein.

‘Hello Klein’s voice came through, cold and distant.

Mr. Harris, Marco stammered, his voice trembling, “Mrs. Harris… she’s been in a car accident”

With a heavy thud, the phone shipped from Klem’s hand and hit the floor

His heart sank.

Klein sat in the passenger seat, his eyes deep and stormy, fingers curled on his knees, trembling uncontrollably

“Step on it!” Klein barked, his voice sharp with urgency

The driver stiffened, his back ramrod straight as he stepped down firmly on the accelerator

Klein’s mind was in complete chaos

Every smile, every lawn, she was everything to him

If she died, his entire world would collapse

“Mr. Harris, don’t worry. Mr Harris is going to be okay, the driver sød, forcing out the words, though has wo anything but convincing.

Klein’s eyes were blazing red, his voice rough bh resolute “Yeah, she’s going to be okay”

‘She’s going to be alright he told himself, refusing to leNear take hold.

Just yesterday, she was holding the flowers he’d given her, her smile outshining even the blooms.

She has to be okay. She just has to, Klein repeated in his mind, clinging desperately to hope

The moment the car screeched to a halt at the hospital, Klein bolted out.

Where’s the girl who just got brought in by ambulance? Where is she?” Klein demanded, his voice tight with panse

The raurses and doctors were startled by the man who looked like he was about to lose it. “Which girl? What’s her name? of them stammered.

The girl from the car crash… she didn’t survive,” a doctor hurried over, voice trembling

Klein turned his head slowly, his eyes cold as ice, staring straight at the doctor. “Who died?” His tone was so chilling it felt ike a threat.

The doctor looked stunned “Uh, the girl who was just brought in. Are you… her family?”

Klein felt like an invisible hand was crushing his heart in a vice.

He felt his blood freezing in his veins at that moment.

How could she be dead?’ he thought, unable to wrap his head around it.

Mr. Harris!” Marco called out loudly, his voice carrying through the hospital. “Mrs. Harris is over here. She’s on an IN

Klein, who just moments ago felt like he’d died inside, suddenly had a glimmer of hope flickering in his eyes. He looked up and rushed straight toward Marco.

In the observation room, Whitney was lying there peacefully, her forehead freshly bandaged. Mr. Harris, she just had a brain scan. The doctor said she’s fine. She just needs some rest. It’s all superficial injuries, nothing internal. We really dosiges a bullet, Marco said, his voice brimming with relief.

Klein nodded, forcing himself to swallow down the bitter taste of blood that had crept up his throat

He sat down at her bedside, gently held her uninjured hand, and pressed it against his eyes as if trying to absorb her
