Chapter 169
Klein wanted Whitney to take
time off, but she turned him down.
First. I’ve already taken way too many days off this year, Second, I don’t want to just around and rest. Staying busy is the only thing that keeps me from overthinking all that nonsense, Whitney thought to herself.
Before things blew up. Townsend had talked to Ivan several times, telling him not to get Whitney involved in that whole mess. In the end, when everything finally exploded, the consequences came knocking.
One of Hector’s clients bailed, choosing to cut ties early rather than stick around with PrifeeBridge Law Firm.
“Mr. Walton, your protégé is way too headstrong. It was just a pro bono case. She really didn’t need to go all out like that She’s never even done criminal defense before. Look at Ms. Sullivan in our firm. She’s handled way messier cases. If Whitney had taken it on, she’d probably end up ticking off the judge,” Townsend said.
Ivan tried to smooth things over, “Townsend, you’re right. But you can’t expect young people to be as lifeless and boring as us old guys. If everyone here was like that, what kind of future would this firm even have?”
Townsend shot him a glare. ‘Who are you calling old? Fifty isn’t old!’ he thought.
He wasn’t about to admit he was getting old.
“So what do you suggest we do? Hector’s been giving me a hard time, and that big pharma company is connected to Mr. Young. You stepped on their toes, so now they’re making us pay for it,” Townsend said.
Ivan grinned. “How about I send a client his way to make up for it?”
Townsend waved his hand and said, “Fine, whatever. But you need to sit down with Whitney and set her straight about this. Otherwise, let’s just put the non-equity partner thing on hold for now.”
Now Ivan shot him a look, not backing down.
“No way! Townsend, you really need to think this through. Losing one pharma client is nothing. If you don’t get this right, we could lose even bigger accounts,” Ivan said.
Townsend frowned and asked, “What are you getting at?”
Ivan smiled. “Sure, Whitney’s not perfect. But if you look at the whole team, she’s hands down the best of the younger crowd. I know Hector wants to push his own men, but you know better than anyone if Gina can really handle it.”

“When it comes to that promotion spot, Whitney’s the only one who’s truly qualified,” Ivan insisted.
“Just think about it,” he said.
With that, Ivan headed out without another word, leaving Townsend deep in thought.
‘I thought Whitney just had some ties with the manager at Harris Group. But could it be she’s actually connected to someone even higher up?’ Townsend wondered.
When Ivan stepped out of Townsend’s office, he saw no one at Whitney’s desk. He tapped on her desk and asked, “Where’s Whitney?”
Valerie pointed at the meeting room. “Boss, Whitney’s with a client. She’s been going all out lately, taking every case, big or small!”

After Ivan left, Whitney kept working for another hour. At ten, Klein called her right on time.
All week, he knew she’d been getting home at ten every night.
She’d already told him not to bother picking her up, but he couldn’t stop himself from worrying no matter what the sart
Whitney stepped out of the building, not even noticing Townsend’s car. But when she spotted that eye-catching plate he jogged right over.
With no one around this late, she just let Klein pull up to the front entrance without a second thought.
Townsend rolled down his window, his eyes widened

“Wait, isn’t that Klein Harris’s plate? he thought
His heart raced. Not caring whether Ivan was already asleep. Townsend called him
“Hey, Townsend, what’s so urgent at this hour?” Ivan answered, a little annoyed.
“Ivan, did your protégé get married? Who’s her husband?” Townsend blurted out

“Ivan, is your protégé’s husband Klein Harris?” Townsend asked straight up.
*Well, since you guessed it, what’s the point of asking?” Ivan replied sounding totally casual
Townsend nearly blew a fuse.
‘So he knew the whole time, but kept me in the dark, Townsend thought, annoyed.
Seriously, he was playing dumb all day, dropping hints instead of just telling me straight. Why couldn’t he just say it outright? Townsend grumbled.
In that instant, it all became clear to Townsend.
Now he finally understood why Whitney had suddenly refused to take Starwave Entertainment, why Calvin had gone out of his way to protect her, and why Ivan’s team had landed those Harris Group deals.
He broke out in a cold sweat. ‘If I gave Whitney’s non-equity partner spot to Gina, that would be a total disaster for me! he thought,
“Ivan, you’re going to drive me crazy! I’ll deal with you tomorrow!” Townsend snapped.
After hanging up, Townsend felt his heart race with excitement. Whitney’s like a walking goldmine for this firm. Talk about Juck dropping right into our laps!’ he thought, barely able to contain his grin.
‘Looks like our firm’s status is about to take another big leap forward!’ Townsend thought, feeling a surge of pride.
