Chapter 17
Carter’s heart clenched at the news. He wondered, ‘Did Whitney get burned too?
He recalled seeing her in the office earlier that day–her neck had looked a bit red, but he hadn’t thought much of it at the time gast gave it a quick look.
If that’s really what happened, why didn’t she say anything herself?‘ Carter thought.
“Klein. Milly didn’t even throw the coffee in the video. Wasn’t it Whitney’s sister who did it?” Sabrina gave a nervous laugh, instinctively jumping in to defend Emily.
She’d noticed that James looked really upset right after Klein finished talking.
She was worried James would blame Emily for what happened.
Even though Emily was adopted, she’d been pampered her whole life. It was only after James found out about that incident that year that they were forced to send Emily overseas.
Carter frowned deeply. “Uncle Klein. Tina has always been at odds with Whitney. Milly was just caught up in their mess. Isn’t it a bit much to say that about her?”
The tone Klein used just now really got under Carter’s skin, making him feel inexplicably annoyed.
“So that’s why Whitney didn’t tell me. She just wanted to complain to Uncle Klein,’ Carter thought. ‘No wonder she’s a lawyer. She’s so scheming
Carter couldn’t help but feel irritated by how Whitney always acted so strong–willed. It just rubbed him the wrong way. Klein’s face suddenly grew stern as he fixed Carter with a pointed look, the weight of his gaze making Carter’s heart skip a beat
“Carter, after watching this video, shouldn’t your first thought be for your fiancée?” Klein said.
Carter was at a loss for words. “I…”
George glared at Carter and cut him off, not bothering to hide his annoyance. “Enough, Carter. You really dropped the ball here. Whitney’s your fiancée. She’s about to be your wife in just two weeks. How could you be the last one to find out she got burned?
“If Klein hadn’t told you today, you’d probably still be clueless.
“Tomorrow, bring Whitney over for dinner. You and Emily are both going to apologize to her.”
Carter’s voice rose, clearly annoyed. ‘Dad, why do I have to?”
James, who’d been quiet until now, slammed his hand on the table and snapped, “Because she’s your future wife.”
Carter’s face flushed, then turned pale, and Emily looked just as flustered.
After the way Whitney had talked to her today, just the thought of seeing that woman again tomorrow made Emily feel
uneasy.
And now she actually had to apologize to Whitney? The thought made her even more upset,
Emily’s fingers dug into her palms, her lips drained of all color.

Chapter 17
In James’s study, George said, “Klein, don’t let that brat get under your skin. I’ll make sure he gets straightened out.
Klein gave a slight nod, his face unreadable. “I wouldn’t waste my energy getting mad at him.
‘But Carter really doesn’t know when to stop. We have to keep up appearances and follow the rules. I don’t want people gossiping about the Harris family. What do you think?”
George was 12 years older than Klein, but whenever they were together, he always seemed more like the younger brother. “Absolutely, Klein, you’re right. I’ll make sure to keep an eye on Carter, George replied.
Just then, Sabrina walked in with coffee for them. “Hey, I just got off the phone with Whitney. She’s got a company event tomorrow night, so we agreed she’ll come over for dinner the day after tomorrow”
“Alright, that works.” James said.
Klein didn’t show any emotion, but he did raise an eyebrow.
He stood up, his tone casual. “I’ve got another appointment, so I’m leaving now. I’ll be back for dinner the day after
tomorrow.”
James had wanted to corner Klein about his matchmaking prospects tomorrow, but now he was slipping away again.
“Well, he’s dodging me again, James grumbled to himself.
He waved him off. “Go on, then. Just take it easy on the drinks at your dinner. It’s bad for your stomach.”
Klein bowed his head slightly. “Sure thing, Dad.”

Whitney was totally absorbed in digging up everything she could about Harris Group, determined not to miss a single detail.
Landing the agency for this merger was no walk in the park for PrimeBridge Law Firm.
The guy Ivan set up for tomorrow’s meeting was Calvin Malone, the one running the whole project.
Whitney had already done her homework on Calvin. He was VP of Harris Group’s overseas division and had just flown back with Klein. Basically, he was Klein’s go–to guy.
Calvin had a reputation for being the no–nonsense type, but since Whitney had never dealt with him before, she was feeling a little unsure.
But honestly, no matter how bad things got, as long as Ivan was around, Whitney knew she had nothing to worry about.
Whitney had already stocked up on hangover pills and antacids. She knew she wasn’t getting out of a heavy drinking session
tomorrow.

Once Carter was back in his room and things finally quieted down, he couldn’t help but think about Whitney’s burn again.
He sat there for a long moment, torn between pride and worry, but finally decided to let the drama slide and shoot her a
message.
