Chapter 174
Whitney was scared stiff
She stammered nervously. “You know?
“Yeah Klein said
Klein had spent two hours outside, trying to calm himself down before coming back
During those two hours, he’d had someone look into her exam results. The test had taken place on that Saturday, the day she’d claimed to be working overtime
She hadn’t told him
The results had come out three days ago, and she still hadn’t said a word.
If she didn’t bring it up today, when was she planning to?
Was she going to wait until the day she left the country? Klein thought bitterly.
Ever since he came back from abroad, he had worked tirelessly, carefully orchestrating every move to make this marriage
appen
Every time Whitney said she missed him he d stare at her message for ages, letting every word sink in.
He remembered how she had called him ‘Uncle Klein’ at first, and then switched to the awkward but polite “Klein”.
Now she just called him honey in bed sometimes
Were all those little changes just for show Klein thought. Is there really no room for me in her heart?”
Klein could get hurt too. He wasn’t born tough. He just learned to process his feelings faster than most.
Whenever it came to Whitney, Klein would obsess over every tiny thing, making sure nothing slipped through the cracks.
He’d doted on her like a father, giving her all the warmth and affection he could muster.
But he’d never had the courage to wonder, let alone ask, if the fondness she showed him had ever blossomed into real love.
Whenever she faced trouble, he’d never been the one she turned to.
He’d patiently tried to change the way she thought, but she still couldn’t fully trust him.
Klein’s voice was rough. “Whitney, how much longer will it take for you to truly trust me? To treat me as the one you can always count on?”
Whitney caught the tremor in his voice.
She teared up. I’m sorry. I wasn’t planning to keep it from you. I was going to tell you today.”
“I wasn’t trying to keep it from you. It’s just…”
Klein sneered and said, “So, what is it? Are you scared I’ll stand in your way, keep you from going abroad? Afraid I’ll mess up your future? Or do you just see me as some obstacle on your path to success?”

Whitney panicked, shaking her head desperately. “No, that’s not it. Klein, please, let me explain.
But when she met his cold gaze, her heart ached.
‘If you’d told me sooner, you wouldn’t have to explain yourself now,” Klein said coldly.
With a cold face, Klein hoisted her over his shoulder and strode straight aside
When they reached the couch, he frowned and said. “I told you to wear shoes”

Whitney could see he was shutting her out, and a sudden panic gripped her. She grabbed his fiand, pleading, “Klein, please lon’t go. I’m so sorry. Can we just sit down and talk?”
No, Klein said coldly, pulling his hand free and heading upstairs.
Whitney sat there, feeling like she’d really screwed up this time.
All her plans were in shambles now. She’d blown everything.
Tears poured down her cheeks as she sat alone downstairs, hugging her knees, her clothes wet from crying so hard.
Klein did notice the cold dishes laid out on the table, and the flowers sitting there.
He was just too pissed off. He planned to sulk for a couple of minutes. But as soon as he got upstairs and dropped his uitcase, all he could think about was her teary yes.
He cursed himself and rushed back downstairs
Klein saw Whitney curled up on the couch, her slender body hunched over with her head buried in her knees. His heart lenched painfully for her.
Man, Klein, you’re hopelessly gone for her. For life, he thought bitterly.
Stop crying,” Klein said gently.
Whitney’s tear-streaked face snapped up at the sound of his low voice above.
She choked out, “You didn’t leave.”
Klein let out a sigh and gently gathered her onto his lap.
He took a tissue from the coffee table and carefully wiped away her tears, putting on a stern face. I’m not even crying. Why are you crying?”
Whitney was crying so hard that she couldn’t stop, her sobs wracking her body. “I just… I just feel awful. I didn’t mean to, honey, I swear I didn’t mean to keep it from you.”
“Whitney, I don’t like it when you say sorry. I don’t like it when you thank me, either. Every time you say those things. makes me feel like I’m on the outside, like you won’t let me into your world,” Klein said, his voice low and sad.
“What I do love is when you smile at me and talk to me, when you call me ‘honey, or even when you shout my name mado I want to be the first person you think of when things get tough. I don’t want you to shoulder everything alone,” he added. his tone softening.
