Chapter 182

Chapter 182

Emily lay on the bed, pouting as she answered the phone.

Carter walked in, loosening his tie. “Who’s calling?”

Emily made a face. “It’s Mom.”

Sabrina’s voice was so loud that even without the speaker on, it could be heard clearly through the receiver.

“Carter, Klein has finally agreed. Once you’ve finished up things in Arantica, come back home!” Sabrina said.

Carter was a bit surprised. “Since when is Uncle Klein so generous?”

Sabrina muttered, “Of course he’s not that nice. He’s back home too. I guess he still cares a little about family.”

“Anyway, don’t worry about why he agreed. Just get yourselves back here first. Emily, did you hear me? Book your tickets ASAP!” Sabrina said.

“Cupcake really misses you. If you don’t hurry back, your son’s gonna forget what you look like!” Sabrina added.

Whenever their son was mentioned, Emily couldn’t help but feel uneasy.

She was terrified Carter might discover the truth, that their son wasn’t really his.

No matter what, Emily was determined to keep this secret locked away for good.

When Carter heard Uncle Klein was back, it suddenly dawned on him that it’d been a whole year already.

And that meant Whitney had come back too.

Maybe it was the distance, or maybe it was just because they hadn’t seen each other at all, but over the past year, Carter had barely thought about her anymore.

“Emily, pack up our stuff. We’re heading home next week,” Carter said.

“Already?” Emily pouted, reluctant.

Carter shot her a look. “Already? Emily, don’t you want to see our son?”

“I haven’t seen him since he was born. I really miss him,” Carter added.

Emily’s face stiffened a little. “Of course I do! He’s my own flesh and blood. How could I not miss him?”

Carter frowned slightly. He couldn’t shake the feeling that Emily didn’t seem all that eager to see their son.

‘Maybe it’s just because she’s still young’ Carter mused.

Carter decided he needed to hurry back even more.

The day after Whitney came back home, she went straight to the law firm.

Ivan pulled her into a big hug. “You’re looking full of energy! Welcome back!”

Whitney gave a soft smile. “You too, Boss. You look younger now.”

She hadn’t noticed before, but now that she looked closely, she suddenly noticed something. Ivan had always stuck to black, white, and gray suits. But today, he was rocking a royal blue one.

Ivan had never picked such eye-catching colors.

Ivan cleared his throat, a little embarrassed. “Not bad, I

guess.”

He tried to hide the proud look on his face as he asked, “Do I really look younger?”

Whitney stifled a laugh, but she was sincere. “Absolutely! You should definitely wear more of these bright colors.”

Ivan suddenly remembered what someone had said to him. “Alright, I got it.”

Whitney came back loaded with gifts for everyone at the office.

Valerie held up the perfume, eyes widened. “Whit, how did you know this is my absolute favorite? Oh, you’re the best. Thank you!”

“Well, how’s everyone been this past year?” Whitney asked.

“We’ve been doing well, no complaints. But let me tell you, there’s been some major gossip around here lately!” Valerie grinned.

Whitney leaned in, curious. “Whose gossip is it? Boss’s?”

Valerie’s eyes widened. “How’d you guess?”

Whitney just grinned, keeping quiet about how she’d noticed Ivan’s subtle changes. ‘A woman’s sixth sense never fails. There’s definitely some juicy gossip here,’ she thought.

“Haha, Boss is seeing someone!” Valerie giggled.

“Who is it? Is it someone we all know?” Whitney asked.

Valerie beckoned her closer and whispered, “About six months ago, a criminal defense attorney named Riley joined the firm. She’s super cool and I totally have a girl crush on her. She and Boss didn’t really get along at first, but last time we went to his place for a party, Riley walked out of his bedroom wearing pajamas.”

‘Wow, that’s some next-level gossip,’ Whitney thought.

Valerie grinned. “Wait, there’s more. The second piece of gossip is even juicier. Gina and Hector had a huge falling out and got divorced! Gina even quit the firm!”

“Then Gina tried to patch things up with Boss on the down low, but he totally shot her down. That almost made Riley get the wrong idea. I swear, it was the first time I ever saw Boss actually trying to sweet-talk his girlfriend!” Valerie added.

Whitney raised her brows. Who knew so much juicy drama would go down in just one year away?

“I didn’t see Riley anywhere just now,” Whitney said.

“She’s away for a trial out of town! Probably back next week,” Valerie replied.

Whitney nodded and went through the day without much fuss. Ivan said he’d organize a welcome dinner party for her after work.

Just when Whitney thought her day was going smoothly, she suddenly got a call from the hospital.

Samuel was at death’s door.

When Whitney arrived at the hospital, she ran into the caregiver.

“Ms. Moore, it’s been a while! Glad you’re here. Your dad was actually recovering well this past year, but then a patient with mental issues from another ward kept coming over to mock him. Your dad’s a proud man, so he’d get upset and refused to go for therapy in the rehab room.

“After a while, since he stopped going to therapy, he developed a severe lung infection, and that’s why things turned out like this,” the caregiver explained.

Whitney nodded. “Thanks. I understand.”

Instead of going straight to the ward, she went to see the attending physician first, who gave her pretty much the same rundown as the caregiver did.

For patients with physical disabilities like this, most of them end up passing away because of lung complications.

Finally, Whitney made her way to the ward, and the caregiver slipped out to give her space.

Looking at the frail old man covered in tubes, Whitney suddenly realized her father was actually an old man

now.

Samuel’s eyelids fluttered. For a split second, his eyes lit up when he saw her.

Whitney’s face was unreadable as she sat by his bedside, her gaze locked on the monitor, watching his heartbeat fade away.

“Dad, have you ever regretted it? If you hadn’t been so cold, if you’d been loyal to Mom, if you hadn’t played favorites and had treated us all the same, maybe things wouldn’t have ended up like this,” Whitney said.

She let out a bitter laugh. “It’s a shame. There’s no going back now.”
