Chapter 228

Klein returned from abroad at twenty-three to officially take over the family conglomerate.

To be exact, he had started learning the ropes at sixteen. By eighteen, he’d already boosted the company’s quarterly resu by 20%.

After that, he studied abroad, setting up the group’s international branch and building his business empire while finishin his degree.

He was like a precision machine, working around the clock without ever slowing down.

He didn’t show any unnecessary feelings, nor did he have any particular hobbies.

He seemed like he was put on this earth just to make money.

He returned home at twenty-three.

He knew his father was about to hand over the reins of the domestic business to him.

He came back a day early, and it just so happened that his older brother had taken their father out to check on another branch.

With a bunch of kids from the younger generation making a racket at home, he decided not to let anyone know he’d returned.

His room was on the third floor, and nobody ever came up to disturb him.

After Klein finished his shower, he heard a soft knock outside his door.

He absentmindedly raised his eyebrows, grabbed a towel, dried himself off, slung it loosely around his waist, and opened th door.

The girl had her hair pulled up in a high ponytail, with her head hung down.

‘Is that her?’ Klein thought.

It was Whitney Moore, the eldest daughter of the Moore family.

Klein’s gaze was calm and detached as he casually stared at the fair skin at the back of her neck, his eyes flickering for a

moment.

Her messy, light-colored hair gave her a playful, almost mischievous vibe.

Klein’s heart skipped a beat.

She was blushing badly.

Whitney mustered every ounce of courage she had and finally confessed, “Carter, I like you.”

Klein’s eyes darkened. ‘So she’s here for Carter, he thought.

He swallowed hard, pushing down the strange feeling in his chest, and said, “You’ve got the wrong room. Carter’s room is downstairs.

Confessing her love to the wrong person must feel like the end of the world for a sixteen-year-old girl.

Klein tried to make his voice as gentle as possible. “Whitney, he’s downstairs.”

But no matter how softly he spoke, he still caught the panic in her eyes when she suddenly looked up.

Klein watched calmly as the look in Whitney’s big eyes shifted from panic to embarrassment, then disappointment, and finally, her eyes brimmed with hurt and a sense of being wronged.

She didn’t even dare to glance at him again. She apologized quickly and then bolted downstairs, flustered and desperate

escape.

Klein took a step forward, wanting to chase after her, but then thought, ‘She probably doesn’t want to see me at all right He let her go.

He stood by the bed, watching her panicked escape, his mind lingering on her reaction.

There suddenly came the sound of footsteps from behind. “Uncle Klein, you’re back?”

Carter’s eyes widened in surprise.

Klein suddenly spotted him, and for some reason, felt a flash of annoyance. “What, I can’t come home?”

Carter mumbled, “Of course you can…”

Klein snorted. “Where were you just now?”

He stared at Carter, noticing the awkward look on his face. “Uncle Klein, I was just in my room helping Emily with her homework.”

Klein couldn’t help but feel a trace of distaste in his eyes.

Still, he felt a bit relieved.

At least she came to my room by mistake,’ he thought.

‘If she’d gone to the right room, she would be heartbroken.

Klein didn’t see Whitney drop by their place at all that summer.

Sometimes, he’d overhear his niece Lena grumbling.

“Whitney, why haven’t you come to hang out with me lately?”

Klein was at the kitchen island, sipping his drink, and he couldn’t help but listen in.

“Oh, your grandma’s sick? Okay, I’ll drop by and check on Grandma Moore sometime.”

Lena turned around, startled to see Uncle Klein standing there. She had no idea how long he’d been standing there.

She mumbled nervously, “Uncle Klein, what are you doing here?”

No way he was going to admit he’d been eavesdropping on her call with her

He pulled out two fancy gift boxes he’d set aside earlier from his pockets.

“Someone gave these to me the other day, thought I had a girlfriend. Looks like you’re getting a freebie,” he said.

Lena’s eyes lit up as she took them. “Wow, earrings! They’re gorgeous!”

But Uncle Klein, why did they give you two identical pairs?”

“Whatever, I’ll just give the extra pair to Whit. Then we’ll be matching besties!”

It suddenly hit Lena. “Uncle Klein, since you gave them to me, I can do whatever I want with them, right?”

“Yeah,” Klein replied.

Klein turned and headed upstairs, his expression cool and distant. But as soon as he turned away, he smiled.
