After a year of training abroad, Dustin finally came back home. The Harris family and the Reed family were plann marriage alliance.
He’d barely stepped off the plane when Lena called him.
“Hey, Dustin, where are you?” Lena asked.
“I just landed,” Dustin said with a grin
Lena sent him an address, and Dustin told the driver to drop him off at the restaurant first, and then take his luggag home.
“Dustin, do you know our grandfathers are trying to set us up?” Lena asked.
Dustin’s eyes flickered. “Yeah, I know.”
“I don’t think this engagement is a good idea. It’s just weird. How could we ever get married?” Lena said.
Dustin didn’t get it. “Why not?”
Lena said after a pause, “It just doesn’t feel right. We’ve been fighting since we were little. How could we ever get marri Besides, I’ve treated you as a brother.”
Dustin scoffed. “Really?”
“Yes.” Lena said.
“If you don’t want to get engaged, I’ll talk to Grandpa,” Dustin said, choosing to give in for now.
There was no point forcing a marriage if neither of them wanted it, right?
Lena nodded. “Thanks, Dustin. Dinner’s on me tonight.”
Dustin found himself lost in thought. Back when he left, Lena was just a high school freshman Now she was about ho graduate college. Time really flew.
So, did you get a boyfriend in college?” Dustin asked.
Lena hung her head. “No”
Dustin caught the meaning in her eyes

get engaged?” Dustin’s grandpa asked.
For families like theirs, most people still preferred to marry someone from a similar background.
Of course, if the younger generation found someone they really liked, the elders wouldn’t force them to break up.
Dustin’s grandpa didn’t say it out loud, but he actually thought his grandson had a soft spot for Lena. So, he two old f had decided to play matchmaker.
But who would’ve thought it would be his own grandson who came to say he didn’t want the engagement.
Now he was stuck. How was he supposed to bring this up to James?
“Grandpa, I’ve always seen her as a little sister. You’ve got it all wrong,” Dustin said.
Dustin decided to shoulder all the awkwardness himself.
Lena’s mom wasn’t around, and her only real support was her grandpa. If he spoke up, maybe her grandpa would dote her even more.
“Alright, then you go tell the Harris family yourself. I don’t have the guts to do it,” his grandpa said.
Without hesitation, Dustin went straight to James and took full responsibility for the whole thing.
James was understanding about it. Since it was just a proposed alliance and nothing official had been set, he didnt hold a against Dustin.
After all, when it came to romance, there was no black and white.
Lena watched Dustin head into Grandpa’s office. A few minutes later, he came out.
“Grandpa, I’ll walk Dustin out!” she said, practically jumping at the chance
So, how did it go? Lena asked, her eyes full of anticipation
Dustin scoffed. You really can’t wait for this engagement to crash and barn, huh

“Lena?” Dustin called out.
Lena wobbled on her stool, her eyes glazed over. “Ha, it’s you, Dustin.”
Dustin frowned. “How much did you drink?”
He shot a cold glare at the bartender, thinking. Just how many drinks did you serve her?’
“You’re drunk. I’m taking you home.” Dustin said.

Lena immediately shook her head at the mention of home. “I’m not going home! I don’t want to go home! Don’t both I’m not done drinking yet.”
Dustin wasn’t about to argue with a drunk, so he just scooped her up in his arms without a word.
“Cut it out. If you keep drinking, your grandpa’s gonna chew you out tomorrow,” Dustin said.
As Dustin was taking Lena home, she kept mumbling under her breath.
“Mom, why? Why did you have to marry him?” she slurred, half out of it.
Dustin frowned, carrying her straight into her bedroom. “Could you make her some hangover soup? Otherwise shell f awful tonight. I’ll head out now. Let’s keep this between us, okay? Don’t mention it to, Grandpa James.” he said to the ma
The maid nodded. “Thank you, Mr. Reed. I understand. Lena hasn’t been herself lately. This is the second ume she’s co home drunk.”
Dustin guessed Lena was upset because her mom had remarried, again.
But the second time, as he was driving by, he spotted Lena staggering by the side of the road. His heart skipped a beat an he immediately pulled over.
“Are you crazy? Do you even realize how dangerous that was just now?” Dustin snapped.
Lena’s eyes were red, her voice trembling. “Why is it always you, Dustin?”
Dustin’s face darkened. ‘Seriously, why is it always me who finds her like this? he thought
“Come on, I’m taking you home,” Dustin said firmly.

He carefully pulled her into his arms and said, “Come on, don’t cry. How about finding someone else to fall for?”
“Or, why not fall for me instead? I swear, I’ll never make you cry.” Dustin said softly.
Lena woke up the next morning and found out Dustin was the one who’d brought her home, again.
[Your head still hurting?] Dustin texted.
[No, I’m fine now. Thanks, Dustin.] Lena replied.
Dustin didn’t reply.
‘Looks like she blacked out again,’ Dustin thought to himself.
Later, at a concert, Lena ended up drunk again.
Dustin wasn’t going to be the nice guy anymore. He looked at the drunken girl, his gaze lingering and tender. “Lena/thr times is all you get.”
It wasn’t until their daughter turned three that Lena sighed, “If I’d known Grandpa wanted us, to get engaged back then, I wouldn’t have turned it down. After everything we went through, I still ended up marrying you.”
Dustin chuckled. “Hey, you were the one who didn’t like me back then.”
Lena pouted. “Yeah right, as if you were head over heels for me.”
Dustin rolled over, pinned her beneath him, and kissed her deeply.
“I was. You’ve always been the only one for me,” he whispered.
