Chapter 26
Whitney’s phone fell from her hand with a sharp smack, landing on the floor.
Frank looked puzzled. “Whitney? Are you okay? Are you still stressing over the rivalry between Mr. Walton and Hector?
“Relax. Mr. Barton usually sides with Mr. Walton. This time, Hector is just undercutting us to steal the Harris Group contract. I bet once Mr. Barton hears the whole story, he won’t back Hector.”
Valerie leaned in. “Don’t be so sure. I heard someone over there has ties to the Harris Group.”
“Who?” Whitney and Frank both asked at once.
“You know who,” Valerie whispered. “Mr. Walton’s ex–wife!”
Whitney suddenly realized who she mentioned.
Only then did Whitney realize her phone was still lying on the floor.
But when she picked it up and turned it over, her mind went completely blank for a second.
Her fingers trembled slightly as she held the phone.
She had been on a video call with Klein for ten minutes.
Panicking, Whitney fumbled and hit the end call button with a sharp click.
She immediately felt something was wrong after hanging up.
Now, it looked like she’d called Klein on purpose, let him overhear her complaining about him, and then hung up on him just to make a scene.
After all that, she really did feel like one of those evil, scheming side characters straight out of a webnovel.
Whitney nervously opened the chat with Klein again.
Whitney: [Uncle Klein, I’m really sorry. If I said everything that just happened was a total coincidence, would you buy it?]
Klein: [A coincidence? So you just happened to open my chat, stared at it for half an hour, accidentally hit the call button, and I just happened to overhear you gossiping with your coworkers?]
Whitney wanted to cry, but all she could do was type one/word. [Yes!]
Klein: [What a coincidence. And speaking of coincidences, I’m actually going to be passing by your office soon. How about we grab dinner and chat tonight?]
“Can I even say no to that? Whitney thought, feeling totally cornered. ‘Nope, I really can’t.”
Whitney replied with a smiley emoji. [Okay, Mr. Harris.]
Klein narrowed his eyes, staring at her calling him “Mr. Harris“, and let out a chuckle.

Chapter 26
“Damn. I told her to stop calling me Uncle Klein, and now she’s just getting more and more distant, Klein thought.
Klein replied: [Catch you tonight, Ms. Moore.]
Whitney almost passed out right then and there when she saw his message.
Before Whitney could even faint, Ivan Walton walked out of Townsend’s office with a grim look on his face.
“Boss, how did it go?” Everyone turned to look at him, waiting for his answer.
Ivan looked like he couldn’t care less. “Nothing much. Mr. Barton just said, whoever gets the contract, it’s theirs.”
“Doesn’t matter what you do to get it,” he added.
Whitney and the others’s faces fell, and the mood instantly turned heavy.
As Gina Parsons walked past their group, she flashed a sly smile. “Mr. Walton, what’s up? You don’t look so good.
Ivan didn’t say a word. He just gave his ex–wife a long, meaningful look.
Since Ivan wasn’t saying anything, Whitney and the others just went back to their desks and got back to work.

She gave an awkward little laugh.
Klein gave a faint, almost imperceptible smile. “Sure, let’s go there.”

Whitney was dying to ask Klein how much he’d actually overheard during that call.
But she didn’t have the guts, so she just decided to play turtle and keep her mouth shut.
They were back in the same private room as last time, and Klein had ordered the same soup. Whitney sat there, her mind wandering, still unsure why Klein had asked her out tonight.
She tried to make small talk. “Did they tell James about the engagement being called off?”
Klein poured her a glass of water, taking his time. “Haven’t heard anything. I haven’t been home these past few days.”
His eyes were as dark as a starless night, deep and piercing. “Want me to go talk to him for you?”
Whitney shook her head. “No, that’s okay.”
