Chapter 31
Chapter 31
Lena woke up around noon.
“Whit, did we see Uncle Klein at the bar yesterday?” Lena asked, sounding a bit fuzzy.
Whitney rolled her eyes. “Lena, you don’t remember?”

Lena rubbed her forehead. “Not much. I just remember you ordered some big guy. I ordered a muscular guy, and then Dustin showed up.”
Dustin was Lena’s childhood friend.
They almost got engaged once, but Lena caused a scene at the engagement party and called it off.
Whitney couldn’t quite define their relationship either; whenever they met, they just fought.
“He didn’t do anything to you, did he?” Whitney asked.
Lena raised her voice. “How dare he?”
“What about you? By the way, how did you get home last night?” Lena asked.
Then it hit Whitney; her car was still sitting in the parking lot behind the bar.
“Oh, I just took a cab,” she replied.
“Got it. Too bad, next time I’ll take you somewhere new. Heard they have plenty of hotties there,” Lena said.
Whitney forced a smile. “Nah, I’m not really into them.”
“How can you not be? You were totally staring at that pretty boy yesterday. Alright, alright, we’re besties. I get you,” Lena teased.
“Lena?” A low, familiar male voice came through the phone. “Who are you talking to?”
Whitney was instantly on high alert. “Don’t mention me.”
But Lena didn’t hear that. “Hi, Uncle Klein. I’m on the phone with Whit.”
Oh no, Whitney groaned inwardly.
“Okay,” Klein replied.
Whitney didn’t want to hear anything else and slammed down the phone.
Just then, Frank came over. “Whitney, Valerie, and I have client meetings. Starwave Entertainment asked us to come over. Want to go?”
Whitney blinked slowly. “Sure, I’ll go.”
The contract with Starwave Entertainment ended on the 27th; that was today.
Whitney hadn’t expected Carter to torment her even on the final day. What a troublesome ex, she wondered.

This time, Zoe was straightforward and led Whitney straight into the office.
Whitney saw Carter again and sat down, calm as ever. “Mr. Harris, didn’t expect your company to be so thrifty, not even sparing the last day of the contract.”
Carter seemed to ignore the sarcasm in her voice and slid a contract toward her. “Help me review this service contract, and look it over carefully. You can review it right here.”
Whitey flipped it open and skimmed through quickly, her heart sinking a bit.
It turned out to be the contract Starwave Entertainment signed with the production company for Emily.
Carter didn’t hold back, hiring the top team directly. She stared at the multi–million–dollar contract and twitched the corner of her mouth.
Carter stared at Whitney’s face, hoping to see a hint of disappointment.
But to his dismay, she showed none. Instead, she carefully reviewed it word by word.
He admitted he’d called her on purpose today.
He didn’t believe she was truly over him.
But for the first time, Carter started to wonder if maybe she really had moved on.
“You’re not angry?” he asked softly, narrowing his eyes.
Without looking up, Whitney focused on the contract, amused. “Work makes me happy. Why would I be angry?”
“Mr. Harris, the contract review is done. Aside from the last part about breach penalties needing revision, everything else looks fine. The revised content is already standardized. You can take a look,” she added.
Carter stared at her face without blinking and took the contract.
“Excellent, Ms. Moore. You’re as professional as ever. Are you really not planning to renew with us? I can double the service fee if that helps,” he offered.
Whitney smiled lightly at the wealthy man. “PrimeBridge Law Firm would certainly be willing to renew the contract with Starwave Entertainment, but due to my personal reasons, I won’t be able to serve as your lead counsel anymore.
“Of course, our team has many other outstanding lawyers. If you’re open to it, I can have Mr. Reese come by tomorrow to discuss renewal with your assistant.”
Carter’s gaze darkened. “No need. Since you don’t have time, there’s no reason for us to renew either.”
Just as Whitney stood up, Emily pushed open the office door. “Carter, I came today to-”
She stopped mid–sentence when she saw Whitney in the room.
Her expression stiffened slightly, forcing an awkward smile. “Whitney, you’re here, too? I was just passing by and thought I’d invite Carter to lunch. Whitney, do you want to join?”
Her words were all polite, but her eyes were screaming for Whitney to stay far, far away.

Whitney considered teasing her but decided it wasn’t worth it.
Right now, she just wanted to get as far away from this irritating pair as possible.

“No thanks. I won’t disturb your lunch, Ms. Miller and Mr. Harris. I have something else to attend to. Excuse me,” she said.
A sudden, inexplicable irritation bubbled in Carter’s chest. “Wait, I’ll walk you out. Emily and I were heading downstairs
anyway.”
He looked gently at Emily. “Let’s go. Didn’t we say we’d have lunch?”
‘Stuck with these clingy nuisances, Whitney cursed silently. ‘Do they have to ride the same elevator as me?‘
Whitney got in first and pressed the button for basement level two.
Carter and Emily stood side by side behind her.
When the elevator reached the 12th floor, it suddenly jolted twice, and the lights went out.
Whitney felt herself plunged into darkness, her whole body stiffening as she pressed against the elevator wall.
“Carter, what’s happening? I’m so scared.” Emily’s trembling voice made Carter’s heart ache.
Carter pulled her into his arms. “Don’t be afraid. Don’t worry. Someone will come rescue us soon.”
The elevator’s emergency call button seemed dead, and Carter glanced at his phone; only one bar of signal.
“Whitney, does your phone have signal?” he suddenly asked.
Whitney was dazed, her tank top soaked with sweat. “No, no signal.”
Carter sensed something was off. “Whitney, are you okay?”
Before she could answer, the elevator jolted twice again.
“Ah. The scream from Emily in Carter’s arms drew all his attention.
“Carter, I’m so scared. What if we can’t get out?” she said.
He felt Emily trembling against him, losing any thought of Whitney behind them.
Frowning, he dialed 911. “Hello, we’re trapped in an elevator at Starwave Entertainment, 88 Chiakiang Road.”
“How long do you think rescue will take?” he asked.
After hanging up, Carter soothed gently, “It’s okay, don’t be scared. They said the firefighters will be here in ten minutes at most. Stay calm. I’m here.”
No one noticed the pale woman standing behind them.
Whitney refused to show weakness; she wouldn’t break down in front of them. She curled up in a corner, struggling for
breath.
The pitch–black confined space swallowed all light; she couldn’t see her own hand in front of her face.
It felt like something was closing in from all sides, trapping her tightly in the corner. The suffocating pressure pressed in

She couldn’t hear the couple’s loving voices in front of her. Even though they were so close, their words felt miles away.
