“Whit, don’t you think Uncle Klein has some kind of-” said Lena.

“No, I don’t.” Whitney cut her off immediately. “Lena, Klein is just kind–hearted and treats me like a junior. Don’t read too much into it.”
“That’s true,” Lena said, rubbing her chin. “After all, you are Carter’s fiancée.
“By the way, are you sure you want to call off the engagement? The wedding is only four days away.”
Whitney chuckled lightly, “Of course. Carter doesn’t have me in his heart. Marrying him would only lead to regret.”
“It’s all because of Emily. She’s fine staying abroad, so why come back now?” Lena snorted.
Lena hugged Whitney. “Alright, Whit, no matter what your relationship with Carter is, we’re still best friends. Don’t worry. I’m always on your side.”
Whitney smiled softly, “By the way, has your uncle or anyone else told James about us calling off the engagement?”
Lena shook her head. “Nope. A few days ago, a relative even said they’d come back to attend Carter’s wedding.”
Whitney frowned. ‘With only four days left, are they really going to drag this out until the wedding day?‘ she wondered.
“I see,” she said.

Carter tossed and turned all night, barely sleeping. The next day, he showed up at the office with dark circles under his eyes.
He remembered telling the manager in administration to look after Whitney, so he stopped by the admin department.
“How did Ms. Moore do after you took care of her yesterday?” said Carter.
The man blinked in surprise. “Oh, Ms. Moore? She said she didn’t need me to watch over her, so I left early.”
After the elevator malfunction, they had inspected all elevators on every floor to make sure everything was fine before resuming operations.
He was busy running around with engineering and had no time to worry about a cooperating lawyer.
Carter tapped his fingers thoughtfully on the desk. “She seems okay, right?”
The manager tried to recall. “She was a little shaken up. Girls usually get a bit scared in situations like that.”
Carter kept a stern face, said nothing more, and turned back to his office.
Just as he was hesitating whether to call Whitney, Emily’s call came through.
Emily said, “Carter, can you talk to Dad for me? I don’t want to go on that blind date. That guy’s known for being a player. I don’t want to meet him.”
“Carter, maybe talk to Whitney, too? Once you two get married, I’ll try not to bother you as much. If she doesn’t want me around, I can just stop reaching out.” Emily’s voice trembled a little. “But please, just talk to Dad for me.

“I really don’t want this arranged marriage.”
Carter’s gaze
turned cold. “Did Dad force you into this?”

“Yes. Mom called this morning, gave me a number and address, and said the date’s set for tonight,” said Emily.
“But I have a recording session tonight,” she added.
Carter snorted inwardly. “You don’t have to go. I’ll deal with this at home. Milly, I won’t let you go into an arranged marriage.”
All the concern Carter had just felt for Whitney vanished instantly.
‘How long is she going to keep making a scene?‘ Carter thought.

Whitney rested well overnight and felt much better.
She had to go to the law firm in the morning, so she left a note for Lena before heading out.
When she was about to start her car, she suddenly remembered it was still parked at the Starwave Entertainment building.
So she messaged Lena again, asking her to drive it back when she woke up and had time.
She never wanted to go back to Starwave Entertainment again.
Of all people, the one she least wanted to see showed up downstairs at her place.
“What are you doing here again?” Whitney asked coldly.
Carter sneered, “You’ve been scheming behind my back all this time, haven’t you? That’s why I’m here.”
Whitney rolled her eyes. “I don’t understand what you’re talking about. Move aside. I’m going to be late for work.”
Carter stood like a wall in front of her. “You’re the one who told my dad, aren’t you?
“Whitney, I really underestimated you. You say you want to call off the engagement, but behind my dad’s back, you’re stirring up trouble. You’ve mastered playing both sides.
“If you really want to marry me, why act like you don’t care? Playing hard to get?”
Carter’s face darkened. “I’m sick and tired of you right now.”
With a sharp slap, Whitney looked at him coldly and struck him across the face.
She snapped, “Carter, I’m also tired of you. It’s your parents dragging their feet, not telling James. You’re so bold in front of me. Why don’t you have the guts to tell James you want to call off the engagement?
“You’re too scared? I’m not. Eight o’clock, Harris Manor. Be there.”
Whitney brushed past him and walked out.
She really was in a hurry.
Carter was left dumbfounded, frozen in place by the slap.
