Whitney followed Klein into his Maybach. There was no driver in the car today.

She felt a bit awkward. She wasn’t sure if it was because she had just caused a scene at the wedding or something else.

You’re driving yourself today?she asked.

Yeah,Klein said, settling into the driver’s seat with a laidback, deep voice. Marco took the day off. His wife’s having a baby.

Whitney mentally raised a question mark.

Wait, isn’t Marco like forty or fifty? Is he really having another kid at that age?she thought to herself.

Oh, I see,Whitney replied, lowering her gaze.

She waited for a moment, but Klein didn’t make a move.

Aren’t you going to start driving?Whitney asked.

She suddenly felt his fingers, cold to the touch, barely tracing across her stomach through the thin fabric. Whitney sucked in a breath, not daring to move.

I’ll drive, but you need to buckle up first,Klein said.

Whitney was nervous, and when she shifted, she accidentally pulled at her wound.

Does it hurt?Klein asked, his eyes locked on her bandage.

Whitney nodded slightly. A little.

Physical pain was nothing,Whitney thought. But if something happened to Grandma, I don’t know what I’d do.

Klein’s face was serious. Don’t go around with bare shoulders. You’re still recovering. You need to keep

warm.

After saying that, he realized he sounded like a total dad.

He sneaked a careful look at Whitney. What I’m saying is, with a fracture, you need to keep warm.”

Whitney didn’t even think about how he knew she had a fracture. She just nodded, not really thinking

about it.

She wasn’t in the mood for anything else right now. All she wanted was for Patricia to get better.

The drive to the hospital was quiet, and when they arrived, Klein watched Whitney head upstairs, his gaze steady.

She refused his company.

Chapter 12

Is she starting to regret ruining the wedding?Klein wondered to himself.

Marco just took a quick stroll nearby, but when he got back, he couldn’t believe his eyes. The car was gone He called Klein in a panic. Mr. Harris, I think someone stole your car.

Klein pressed his lips together. No way.

I’m not kidding. I just stepped out for a minute, and when I came back, your car was gone. Mr. Harris, should I call the police right now?Marco blurted out.

Marco just couldn’t figure it out. Seriously, in broad daylight, right outside a fancy hotel? Who’d be bold enough to steal a car here?he thought.

Klein glanced at his car and said, No one stole it. I drove it myself.

Take the rest of the day off, Marco. And seriously, lay off the soap operas,Klein said.

The line went dead.

Marco was left dumbfounded.

Samuel had barely gotten back in the car when his phone started blowing up with calls from relatives, all wanting to know what the hell had just happened at the wedding.

Mom, Whit’s totally lost it. How could she call off the wedding in front of everyone? And she even targeted Emily. Emily’s the Harris family’s precious princess,Tina gloated.

Laura noticed Samuel’s face darken as he talked on the phone, but she decided to pile it on. Tell me about it. Even if the Harris family says they won’t come after us, getting humiliated in public like that? Who could just let that slide?

Laura added, They might act all nice on the surface, but who knows what kind of dirty tricks they’re pulling behind our backs?

Samuel, humiliated and pissed off, slammed his fist on the steering wheel, making Laura and Tina jump in fright.

Enough! Drop it already. Are you trying to make me even angrier?Samuel snapped.

Tina, totally baffled by the sudden yelling, felt a wave of annoyance. Dad, you’re so unfair! It’s obviously Whit’s fault, so why are you blaming us?she said.

You should be mad at Whit, not us!Tina huffed.

Where’s Whit?Samuel wondered. Oh, right, she just told James she was heading to the hospital.

Samuel’s eyes narrowed.

Enough. We’re all going to the hospital. My mom is sick, and none of you have even bothered to visit her.Samuel said.

Tina forced a smile, clearly not happy about it. Fine.

What’s so special about some old woman?Tina thought.

Just a stroke? If only she’d died, that would’ve been perfect, Tina sneered inwardly.

Whitney went to check on Patricia in the hospital room. Her vital signs were stable, but the doctor said sh wouldn’t be w up anytime soon.

That way, she could see Patricia every day when she got home.

Whitney had already figured out the whole plan for Patricia’s care in just one night.

The ridiculous part was that Samuel had only made a brief appearance last night and then vanished.

Just as Whitney was about to head back to get food ready for Patricia, Samuel, Laura, and Tina emerged from the elevator, all looking downcast.

Whit, why did you rush off so fast? Why didn’t you wait for us?Tina complained.

This is so unfair. She even hitched a free ride with Klein. She totally got away with it. Tina grumbled to herself.

I told you already. You don’t need to come to the hospital. I can handle Grandma myself. Just do everyone a favor, and don’t make her even more upset while she’s lying in that hospital bed, alright?Whitney said,

Whitney stood her ground, blocking their way. Laura tugged at Samuel’s sleeve. Fine, if Whit doesn’t wa us there, whatever. It’s not like Patricia ever cared about anyone but her anyway. She always doted on Whit.
