Chapter 61
Two days later, Klein showed up at Whitney’s apartment at precisely six o’clock
She was about to head downstairs when her phone rang. “Are you dressed?” Klein asked.
Whitney glanced at herself in the mirror and nodded, even though he couldn’t see her. “Yeah. I’m ready”
His voice came through calm and smooth. “Can I come up? I’ve got something for you.
Whitney looked around her apartment quickly. It was clean enough, at least. “Sure, come on up
Five minutes later, the doorbell rang right on time.
Whitney opened the door, and the hallway light caught Klein’s sharp features, softening them slightly. He stood at her doorway in a black suit, perfectly still, and held out an elegant shopping bag.
“Wear this instead,” he said casually.
Whitney looked down at her black dress. He was right–they were both wearing black, and standing together, they’d look too dark and somber. “Okay, just wait in the living room for a sec while I change.”
Before Whitney could tell him not to bother taking off his shoes, Klein had already slipped out of his dress shoes and stood barefoot on her floor. “Uh, I only have women’s slippers,” she said.
That one sentence pleased Klein more than she realized. It meant no other man had been here before him–no one but him.
He smiled, “It’s fine, the floor’s clean enough. You don’t need slippers.”
Whitney laughed awkwardly. “Okay, I’ll go change real quick. Just wait here, won’t take long.”
She practically flew back into her bedroom, worried she’d take too long and make him wait.
When she opened the shopping bag, she froze. Inside lay the dress she and Lena had admired at the mall–the one in tiny diamonds that sparkled like stars.
The pure white gown practically glowed in the dim light, and every diamond caught the reflection from her bedhost weig
Did Klein pick this dress?‘ she thought, her heart racing.
Klein settled onto the couch, but barely two minutes passed before her bedroom door opened agai
He raised an eyebrow. “That was fast, he thought. ‘Did she already change?
But when he saw she was still wearing his shirt, his brow furrowed “What’s wrong: Does something they ha
Whitney’s expression was complicated, and she carefully held the dress in her hands is it it might be k this is the one F’m supposed to wear?”
Klein nodded slowly. “Yeah, that’s the one
Whitney turned and walked back into her bedroom with the dress clinched to her chest.

Her mind raced. He came back and immediately ordered a custom gown? And now he’s giving it to me?
Whitney pushed the thoughts aside and slipped into the dress. When she finally looked at herself in the mirror she barely recognized the woman staring back.
The flowing skirt hugged her curves perfectly, and the fabric moved like water with every slight shift of her body
Brilliant diamonds cascaded from her waist down the length of the gown, glittering like a galaxy of stars trailing across the white fabric.
Whitney stepped out with an unsteady grace, and Klein’s eyes narrowed as he watched her. His Adam’s apple bobbed slightly, and his voice came out rough. “You look stunning.”
His intense gaze made her cheeks burn, and she clutched at her dress. “Isn’t it a bit much?”
He let out a soft laugh. “Not at all.”
She’s glowing, he thought. Her beauty left him breathless.
‘We should go. It’s getting late, and the party’s waiting for us.”
Whitney sighed. “Alright.”
She couldn’t shake the feeling that she looked like a bride, and then she glanced at his black suit. He looked exactly like a
groom.
The matching outfits made her heart race most frustratingly.

Tonight’s event was a private gathering.
Klien said, “Don’t worry, it’s just a few guys I grew up with–basically like my younger brothers. Our high school physics teacher’s turning seventy this year, so they threw him this birthday banquet.”
Whitney understood what he meant. The people there wouldn’t gossip about seeing her, and they definitely woulin round James with the news.
She nodded. “Got it.”
Eric came alone today with no date.
For private gatherings like this, they never brought along random women
Dustin was the same.
Among the group of friends, Oliver was the only one with a girlfriend and he loved showing off

Joanne smiled. “Thank you. Mr. Whitmore. You’re too kind.”
Oliver patted Joanne’s hand. “They’re right. You’re amazing.”
Why isn’t she playing lead roles?‘ Dustin thought. ‘Because Oliver won’t let her, that’s why.
He liked Joanne, but didn’t want her to get too famous. This level of success was perfect–she didn’t have to stay up all night filming or deal with demanding schedules, and she didn’t have to do too many romantic scenes.
For Oliver, her current level of fame was just right.
As for what Joanne thought about it, nobody really knew.
Dustin and Eric watched Oliver flaunt his relationship, and they were grinding their teeth in irritation.
‘He loves showing off so much, Eric thought. ‘The day they break up, we’ll all be celebrating.
Joanne’s bright eyes blinked as she glanced at her boyfriend’s two friends. ‘Why do they look at me like they’re disappointed in me or something?‘ she wondered.
Paul looked around the room. “Klein isn’t here yet? Is he picking up his girlfriend?”
Klein was several years older than the rest of them, but he had also been Paul’s student in high school.
Technically speaking, Klein was their senior.
Eric smirked and jumped in. “Sir, you don’t know Klein. He’s so cold that nobody wants to hang out with him except us, and if it wasn’t for us, he wouldn’t have any friends at all. There’s no way he has a girlfriend.”
They all figured that post on his social media was just some single guy’s delusion.
Only Dustin rubbed his nose, thinking that Klein might actually bring someone tonight.
Oliver chimed in. “Exactly. Mr. Whitmore, out of all your students, I’m clearly the most successful one
Dustin and Eric shot him identical cold glares. ‘Seriously? Not having a girlfriend means you’re not successful they thought
Joanne felt like her boyfriend was drawing way too much hate, so she tugged on his hand.
Oliver finally shut his mouth.
Klein got out of the car and walked around to open Whitney’s door for her. He held out his arm, and White’s hand through it without hesitation.
