Skipped At The Altar, Taken By His Uncle novel Chapter 8

Chapter 8 Bumped Into Whitney’s Car

Whitney headed to the law firm early in the morning.

“Whitney, you’re finally here. Mr. Walton is furious today. He’s counting on you to fix things. Valerie and Frank totally messed up that court case yesterday,” Rosalie, Whitney’s assistant, whispered to her.

Whitney nodded and knocked on the conference room door.

“Come in,” a voice called from inside.

As soon as she opened the door, she saw Valerie Garner and Frank Reese looking completely defeated, while their manager, Ivan Walton’s face was stone-cold, clearly too angry to even speak.

“Morning, Whitney. How did the first hearing go yesterday for that guarantee contract dispute with SilverCore Capital that you were handling?” Ivan asked.

Whitney sat down and replied, “Boss, the first hearing went smoothly. The other party’s client is open to a settlement.”

“Good. You two should really learn from Whitney. Maybe then I wouldn’t have to take blood pressure meds every day. Alright, you two can go. Whitney, stay behind for a moment,” Ivan said.

Whitney took a deep breath. “Boss, there’s something I want to discuss with you.”

When it came to his star employer, Ivan always showed extra patience. “Go ahead.”

“Since my legal counsel contract with Starwave Entertainment is ending this month, I was thinking of passing it on to either Frank or Valerie. What do you think?” Whitney asked.

Starwave Entertainment was a subsidiary of the Harris Group, and Carter was the one running the show.

Since they’d split up, Whitney just wanted to cut all ties with him.

Ivan frowned, “You were the one who brought Starwave Entertainment in. Are you sure you want to hand it off? Whitney, are you thinking straight today?”

Starwave Entertainment itself wasn’t much, but the Harris Group behind it was a huge opportunity.

Ivan had called Whitney in today, hoping for a chance to connect with the Harris Group’s executives.

If their firm could land any of the Harris Group’s core business accounts, it would mean significant long-term gains.

Only a handful of insiders knew about Whitney’s engagement to Carter. Outside the elite circles of Ravorport, nobody had any idea about her ties to the Harris family, let alone that her father was the CEO of AetherTech.

“Boss, I know what I’m saying. To be honest, I only landed the contract because my ex-boyfriend pulled some strings for me. Now that we’ve broken up, I really don’t think it’s appropriate for me to stay involved,” Whitney said.

It was the first time Ivan realized Whitney’s boyfriend actually worked at Starwave Entertainment.

“Aren’t you two getting married soon?” Ivan blurted out.

Whitney let out a bitter smile. “But we broke up.”

Ivan mulled it over for a bit, drumming his fingers on the table. He finally replied, “Alright. When the contract’s up, I’ll take care of the handover myself.”

By the time Whitney finished up her work, she realized it was already 11:30 AM.

Her phone screen was still empty, without any messages from Carter.

She scoffed inwardly, ‘I knew it. He never took it seriously.’

“Whitney, are you still going for those light meals at lunch? You’re already slim enough. You don’t have to worry about squeezing into a wedding dress,” one of her coworkers teased.

Whitney smiled, “No more dieting. Whatever you guys are eating, count me in.”

Someone teased, “Wow, Whit, after three months of sticking to your diet, you’re finally giving up?”

“I just don’t need to wear a wedding dress anymore,” Whitney replied. “Let’s go. If we don’t head down now, we’ll be stuck waiting for the elevator again.”

Everyone looked at each other, puzzled.

”Wait, what does she mean by not needing a wedding dress? Wasn’t she supposed to be getting married at the end of the month?’ everyone exchanged glances, thinking in confusion.

*****Carter stayed up all night talking with Emily, only finally going to bed when the sun was coming up.

He crashed on the living room couch, with Emily just a few steps away in her bedroom, and somehow, he slept better than he had in ages.

When he finally woke up, he realized it was already noon.

He then remembered that he was supposed to get his marriage license with Whitney today.

He expected to see a message from Whitney demanding answers, but when he unlocked his phone, there was nothing from her—just a couple of texts from his friends.

Carter rubbed his temples and got up.
