Aria’s POV
Rebecca.
Rebecca Silver Fang.
The name echoed in my skull like a curse.
Of course. Of course it was her. Of course the universe would find the cruelest possible joke to play on me.
She stood there in all her designer glory. Red dress. Perfect hair. Jewelry that cost more than everything I owned combined.
And those green eyes. Those cold, calculating green eyes that used to look at me like I was dirt on her shoe.
They were doing it again.
For a long moment, neither of us moved. Neither of us spoke. We just stood there, frozen, staring at each other like ghosts from the past.
Lina stirred beside me. I felt her small hand tighten around mine.
"Mommy? Who’s that lady?"
I couldn’t answer. My throat had closed up completely.
Rebecca recovered first.
"Aria Shadow Moon." She said my name slowly. Deliberately. Like she was tasting something bitter. "Well, well, well. Isn’t this a surprise."
Her voice was exactly as I remembered. Honey and poison. Sweet on the surface. Deadly underneath.
I forced myself to breathe. In. Out. In. Out.
Three years. Three years since I’d run away from this world. Three years of building a new life. A better life.
And here she was. Standing in front of me like no time had passed at all.
"So you’re the mother of the rude little girl?" My voice came out steadier than I expected. Cold. Flat.
Rebecca’s perfect eyebrows rose.
"And you’re the mother of the human girl?" Her eyes swept over me. Up and down. Taking in every detail with obvious disdain. "That explains so much."
"Excuse me?"
"I mean, look at you." She gestured at me with one manicured hand. "No scent. No wolf. No wonder your daughter is... defective."
The word hit like a slap.
Beside her, the little blonde girl giggled. That same cruel sound from this morning.
"See, Mommy? I told you she was gross."
"Yes, darling." Rebecca patted her daughter’s head. "You did."
My blood boiled.
But I forced myself to stay calm. Forced myself to think clearly. This wasn’t about me. This was about Lina. About getting her the apology she deserved.
"Your daughter said some very hurtful things to mine this morning." I kept my voice level. Professional. "She called her a ’human stink.’ Made her cry. Made her not want to come to school."
Rebecca shrugged. One shoulder. Dismissive.
"And?"
"And I expect an apology."
Silence.
Then Rebecca laughed.
The sound was sharp. Mocking. It bounced off the walls of the small meeting room and scraped against my ears like broken glass.
"You expect an apology?" She pressed her hand against her chest. Dramatic. "Oh, that’s precious. That’s truly precious."
"I’m serious."
"So am I." Her smile vanished. Her eyes went cold. "My daughter told the truth. Your child doesn’t smell like a wolf. She smells like a human. Like nothing." She wrinkled her nose. "Like you."
"That doesn’t give her the right to—"
"She said what everyone else was thinking." Rebecca cut me off. Sharp. Impatient. "If you can’t handle the truth, maybe you should keep your defective child at home."
Defective.
There was that word again.
I felt Lina press closer to my side. Felt her small body trembling against me.
"Mommy?" Her voice was tiny. Scared. "Why is she being so mean?"
Rebecca’s attention shifted to my daughter. Something ugly flickered in her eyes.
"Is that her?" She tilted her head. Studied Lina like she was examining an insect. "How pathetic. She doesn’t look like much. Dark hair. Golden eyes." Her smile turned sharp. "Interesting coloring. Doesn’t look like you at all."
My heart stopped.
No.
She couldn’t know.
Rebecca’s voice was triumphant. "My daughter is the Alpha heir’s child. The future princess of Blood Crown pack. And your little... whatever she is... had the nerve to be in the same class as her."
The blonde girl stuck out her tongue at Lina.
"See? I’m more important than you. My daddy is the Alpha!"
Lina shrank back. Her grip on my hand was crushing.
My head was spinning. My chest was tight. Every breath felt like swallowing broken glass.
A perfect, blonde, wolf-scented daughter.
"You’re Kael’s girlfriend." I cut her off. "Not his Luna. Not yet." I let that sink in. "I’m guessing there’s a reason for that? A reason he hasn’t marked you after all these years?"
Her face twisted.
"That’s none of your—"
"You’re right. It isn’t." I shrugged. "But this recording? This is everyone’s business. Because I’ll make sure everyone hears it. Every wolf in the territory. Every council member. Every elder who might have a vote on whether you’re fit to be Luna."
Rebecca was shaking now. With rage. With fear. With the realization that she’d miscalculated badly.
Silence.
The clock ticked on the wall. Loud in the quiet room.
Rebecca’s green eyes darted around. Looking for an escape. Looking for an angle.
She found none.
"Fine." The word came out through gritted teeth. "Fine."
She grabbed her daughter’s shoulders. Spun her around. Pushed her toward Lina.
"Say sorry."
The little girl’s eyes went wide. "But Mommy—"
"Say it!"
"Sorry." The word came out flat. Empty. She wasn’t even looking at Lina. Her eyes were fixed on the floor.
"For what?" I pressed. "Say what you’re sorry for."
Rebecca’s nails dug into her daughter’s shoulders. "For calling you names. For saying mean things. Whatever."
It wasn’t a real apology. We all knew it.
But Lina was looking at me. Waiting to see what I would do.
I crouched down to her level. Took her hands in mine.
"You see that, baby?" I whispered. "That’s what happens when people do wrong things. They have to apologize. Even when they don’t want to."
Lina nodded slowly. Her eyes were still wet. But something had shifted in them. A tiny spark of something that looked almost like hope.
"Can we go now, Mommy?"
"Yes, baby." I stood. Gathered her into my arms. "We can go now."
I turned to leave. Made it three steps toward the door.
"This isn’t over." Rebecca’s voice followed me. Low. Venomous. "You think you’ve won? You’ve just made the biggest mistake of your life."
Then Rebecca yanked her daughter’s hand and stormed out of the room. Her heels clicked furiously against the floor. The sound faded down the hallway until it disappeared entirely.
