Aria’s POV
Before I could respond, small footsteps thundered down the stairs.
"MOMMY! UNCLE CASSIUS! I’M HUNGRY!"
Lina burst into the kitchen. All energy and chaos and beautiful, wonderful distraction.
I scooped her up. Held her tight.
"Perfect timing, monster. Dinner’s ready."
"YAY!"
Cassius’s eyes met mine over her head. That same gentle warmth. That same unspoken promise.
Whatever happened next, I knew he would be there.
And somehow, that made everything feel a little less scary.
---
The next few days were a blur.
Packing. Apartment hunting. Signing papers. Moving boxes.
Cassius helped with everything. Of course he did. He carried the heavy furniture. Assembled the new bed frame. Made sure Lina was entertained while I organized our new space.
He never complained. Never made me feel guilty.
Just showed up. Every day. Ready to help.
The new apartment was small. Tiny, really. One bedroom that Lina and I would share. A kitchen barely big enough to turn around in. A living room that doubled as everything else.
But it was mine.
OURS.
And that mattered more than square footage.
---
Saturday morning arrived faster than I expected.
I stood at the train station. Lina’s hand in mine. My heart pounding against my ribs.
Sophie was coming.
Any minute now.
Any second.
The platform was crowded. Wolves and humans mixed together in the border zone. The air smelled like exhaust and coffee and anticipation.
"Mommy?" Lina tugged at my hand. "Who’s Sophie?"
"My best friend." I crouched down to her level. "Remember how I told you about the nice lady who gave Mommy a job in the human world? Who was always there for me?"
Lina nodded.
"That’s Sophie. She’s very excited to meet you."
"Is she nice?"
"The nicest." I smiled. "But she’s also very... loud."
"Louder than me?"
"Much louder."
Lina’s eyes went wide. "Wow."
The train whistle sounded.
My head snapped up.
There it was. The border express. Pulling into the station. Slowing down. Stopping.
Doors opened.
People streamed out. Faces I didn’t recognize. Bodies moving past.
Where was she?
Where—
"ARIA!"
The scream cut through the crowd like a knife.
I spun around.
There she was.
Sophie.
She stood at the edge of the platform. Suitcase abandoned beside her. Arms spread wide. Tears already streaming down her face.
"SOPHIE!"
I was running before I knew I’d moved. Pushing through the crowd. Ignoring the startled looks. Ignoring everything except her.
We collided in the middle of the platform.
Her arms wrapped around me. Crushing. Desperate. Exactly the rib-cracking hug she’d promised.
"You’re here," she sobbed into my shoulder. "You’re actually HERE."
"I’m here." My own tears were falling now. Hot and fast. "I’m here."
"I missed you so MUCH."
"I missed you too. God, Sophie, I missed you so much."
We stood there. Holding each other. Crying like idiots in the middle of a crowded train station.
I didn’t care.
Let them stare. Let them judge. Let them think we were crazy.
