Cynthia's attitude toward Noah hadn't changed—she was still gentle and considerate—but Noah knew she was still angry with him.
Gina had been fired long ago.
Noah had also had the White family investigated, but nothing came of it.
Nicola was young. A simple open window at night was enough to make her sick. Feeding her something a child shouldn't eat could easily cause vomiting and diarrhea.
These were minor incidents, not murder or poisoning, so there was no evidence to be found.
Noah had also taken Nicola to the hospital for a check-up, but since the child wasn't currently sick, the examination revealed nothing. The doctor just advised him to take better care of her, or perhaps give her something to boost her immune system.
Noah had confronted Karina as well.
Karina admitted to bribing Gina but vehemently denied ever harming Nicola.
The evidence against her concerning Gina was irrefutable, so she had no choice but to confess. But regarding Nicola, Noah had no proof, so Karina naturally denied it. She even cried hysterically, accusing Noah of falsely blaming her, claiming she was Nicola's own mother—what kind of monster would harm their own child?
Even the most cold-hearted mother would protect her own, but the Whites were something else entirely.
Although Noah had no concrete proof, Nicola falling ill at such convenient times could not be a coincidence. Besides her sickness, Karina had also bribed Gina to spy on Noah and Cynthia's private life.
Furious, Noah had taken action against the White family's business.
The Whites were in the hotel chain business, which had been struggling for years. The couple was poor at management, and their son was a good-for-nothing. It was only because Karina had managed to attach herself to the Thompson family that their business had barely stayed afloat.
Now, with the Thompson family actively working against them, the White family's business was driven directly into bankruptcy.
"With so many scripts, how long will you be this busy?" Noah asked, turning his head to look at her.
Their relationship had been strained recently, and Noah was clearly treading carefully, grasping at straws for conversation.
"This is just the initial screening. Out of dozens of scripts, it's a win if we find one or two of good quality," Cynthia replied earnestly, as if she were talking to a company employee. Her tone made Noah want to both laugh and cry.
Noah reached out, pulled Cynthia down beside him, and wrapped his arm around her waist. "Are you still angry with me?"
"No," Cynthia answered flatly.
Noah sighed at her response. "Cynthia, we've known each other for so many years. Do you really think I can't tell when you're angry?"
Cynthia pressed her lips together, and the air around them seemed to fall silent.
