Letitia burst out, "Jessa was drunk and accidentally spilled wine on Yvonne's dress, so Yvonne deliberately kicked over the champagne tower and soaked us! Isn't Mrs. Thompson going too far?"
"When Ms. Lane spills wine on my wife, it's an 'accident.' When my wife bumps into a champagne tower, it's 'deliberate.' Is my wife the one going too far, or is Ms. Bishop being a bully?" Bennett's tone was light, but his words were heavy.
Letitia knew she'd crossed a line and wisely shut her mouth.
Jessa was much smarter than Letitia. She kept her head down and said nothing, making no attempt to argue with Bennett.
Although she had only recently returned to the country and wasn't familiar with Istra's high-society families, she had been repeatedly warned by her family not to cross the Thompsons.
"Ms. Lane accidentally spilled wine on my wife, and my wife accidentally bumped into the champagne tower. Since the Thompson family's hospitality is clearly lacking, we won't detain you two any longer."
Bennett then turned to the island's manager. "Sean, what time does the boat depart tomorrow morning? Please arrange for Ms. Lane and Ms. Bishop to be on it."
"Right away, Mr. Thompson," Sean immediately nodded in agreement.
Without another glance at anyone else, Bennett lowered his gaze to Yvonne, the coldness in his eyes finally melting into warmth. He adjusted the jacket on her shoulders, and in the next moment, swept her up into his arms and walked away.
After Bennett left with Yvonne, the lively bonfire party fell into a sudden, dead silence.
Jessa and Letitia were left standing there, disheveled and humiliated, under the scrutinizing and accusatory glares of everyone present.
The crash of the champagne tower had been loud enough to be heard by Thomas, who had been some distance away.
He only just arrived and, after asking a staff member what had happened, finally understood the whole story.
"Are you sober now?" Thomas asked, his voice devoid of emotion.
Jessa thought he was showing concern and nodded with a slight blush. "My head's clear now, just a little headache."
"Since you're sober, you'd better go pack your things. The boat leaves the island at five in the morning. Don't be late." With that, Thomas placed his glass on a nearby table, turned, and strode away.
With both Bennett and Thomas gone, the bonfire party seemed to lose its spark.
Most of the people present were from the Thompson Group, and they had relished the rare opportunity to interact with the formidable Bennett Thompson and the screen icon Thomas Taylor. But thanks to Jessa and Letitia's drama, both men had left.
Everyone now looked at the two women with expressions of clear disapproval and blame.
