For the next few days, Bennett remained at the military base and didn't call back.
Yvonne, with nothing much to do at home, didn't try to contact him either, not wanting to interfere with his work.
One morning, while Yvonne was on her usual walk with Bullet around the neighborhood, two unfamiliar men in plain clothes approached her.
Before they could get close, they were intercepted by several tall, imposing men.
After Yvonne became pregnant, Bennett had arranged for a team of highly skilled bodyguards to protect her around the clock.
Though Yvonne felt it was unnecessary, they were discreet, never interfering with her daily life, so she paid them little mind.
The two men in plain clothes were speaking politely with the Thompson family's bodyguards, presenting their credentials.
The credentials checked out, but the bodyguards were clearly hesitant to let them near Yvonne.
Just then, however, Bullet ran over and began circling the two men.
One of the men reached out and patted Bullet's large head in a friendly manner.
Yvonne followed Bullet over, looking at them with a puzzled expression.
“Mrs. Thompson, hello. We’re from a special task force investigating the Walker case. We have a few questions and would appreciate your cooperation,” one of the men said to her.
Yvonne was stunned for a moment, then glanced at her bodyguards.
A bodyguard confirmed, “Their credentials are valid.”
Yvonne nodded. Although the men were in plain clothes, they had an air of authority that suggested they were from a government agency.
“In that case, please come upstairs with me to talk,” Yvonne said, then led Bullet toward the apartment building.
“I took Yolanda to the hospital for a check-up today. The doctor said her kidney function has declined again. If we can’t get it under control, she could suffer from kidney failure and need another transplant,” Mrs. Walker said, her eyes red as she dabbed at her tears.
A dark shadow of irritation crossed Vincent’s features.
The authorities were investigating him, and if they found any concrete evidence, he could be arrested at any moment.
Vincent was desperate to keep a low profile, but Yolanda was only adding to his troubles.
In the past, Yolanda had been his only daughter, and he had cherished and doted on her.
But now that Vincent had a healthy son, his daughter was nothing more than a burden—useless to keep, but a nuisance to get rid of.
“If she’s acting like a child, what’s your excuse? Why is she still here instead of in a hospital bed?” Vincent scolded Mrs. Walker coldly.
“Yolanda refuses to be admitted. You know how she is—she can’t stand the sight of a hospital bed or the smell of antiseptic. Besides, her illness can’t be cured by a hospital stay. Those are just temporary fixes. For a complete recovery, she needs another transplant,” Mrs. Walker said, her voice choked with emotion.
