Chapter 196 Threat
James shook his head, babbling, “No, no, no.” He couldn’t accept this. The gemstone was sold for an impossible price. Five times that was too much for his family to afford. To make matters worse, they’d spent most of what they’d gotten.
Suffice it to say, they didn’t have any money to pay.
“What did you just say?” The martial servants glared at James. James crumpled, and he had no choice but to stamp the contract. As the stamp fell on the paper, the contract was sealed.
Gabriel curled his lips into a ruthless smile. “I’ll stay in the city and keep an eye on you. You’re not going anywhere, Norwood.”
This was just the start. The Norwoods’ members began receiving calls after calls. And the results were horrifying. They were cancellations of projects, partnerships, and friendships. The Norwoods’ network was ruined.
James was crushed by the outcome. He became so agitated that blood splurted from his lips. Their punishment had begun. Everyone was watching in silence, including the heiresses. The Norwoods were pariahs now.
They might live to see the next dawn, but they were as good as dead. No, their fate was far worse. Someone might still mourn them in death. But now? No one would. They would even come to detest the Norwoods.
They would be treated like the plague, banished from society for good. Their lives would be one of despair and nothing else.
Hazel and the others knew why Cain didn’t destroy them. Sure, he wanted to torment them, but that wasn’t the only reason he’d decided against eliminating them. He’d decided to be “merciful” because there were reporters here, and he needed to keep up his image pristine.
The state, and perhaps half the nation, had its eyes on this case. So, Cain wasn’t going to attack anyone in public.
“The Norwoods fell because of Evan. And now a fate worse than death awaits them. Cain is cruel. He won’t do anything while everyone’s watching, but he will make a move sooner or later,” Hazel muttered.
She’d seen many cases like this. First, Cain would pile on the pressure, breaking their spirits before finally wiping them off the face of the earth. What made it truly horrifying was that Cain didn’t even have to lift a finger.
All he had to do was wait for the Norwoods to break under pressure and take their own lives.
Suddenly, Gabriel asked, “What about Evan, Father? What do you want to do with him?”
Everyone looked at Evan. His case was complex, and Cain fell into silence. Evan was… awkward. He’d cleared his name, so he didn’t exactly play a part in the deceit. But then again, he was a Norwood.
Since he’d made it clear that the Norwoods would be punished, Evan should be punished as well.
However, there was an army of reporters livestreaming there. One wrong move could cost him his family’s image. A moment of hesitation later, he said, “He used to be a Norwood, but now he’s a Solberg.”
The crowd was stunned. They looked shocked, especially Hazel. She wasn’t expecting her family to be involved.
Cain said again, “I know you’re there, Evan.”
Gabriel turned on the speaker so everyone could hear his father. Cain continued darkly, “You’re lucky you found evidence and cleared your name. You lived, married Hazel, and became a Solberg. You have no ties with the Norwoods, but you’d better stay with the Solbergs for life.
