Chapter 251 Freedom at Last
They had been waiting for Evan to get a divorce. Only after the divorce could they openly state their intentions and compete for him.
“This is amazing! Evan’s finally divorced!” Sylvie was so overwhelmed with joy that tears streamed down her face.
Estelle couldn’t help curling her lip at the sight of Sylvie behaving so out of sorts. “Everyone’s happy he’s divorced, sure. Still, don’t you think you’re being a bit… much? You’re really putting on a show, aren’t you?”
Sylvie merely shook her head. “You don’t understand. I’m not crying because I finally have a change with him. I’m crying because I’m genuinely happy for him.”
Her voice rose into an excited squeal. “He’s free! He finally broke out of his cage!”
Why had Gaius been so certain his granddaughter had the greatest advantage?
It wasn’t her looks or her figure, nor was it because of her personality or her family background.
It was because Sylvie had known Evan the longest and stayed by his side the longest.
She had met him at his lowest, when he had been at his most desperate. So, she knew exactly how deeply Hazel and the other two had hurt him. She knew better than anyone how badly he had wanted to break free from them.
And now, he finally had.
Sylvie was truly, sincerely happy for him. She was far happier than when she had learned that she’d been cured of her terminal illness.
To truly love someone meant loving all of him, the good and the bad.
It didn’t mean just admiring Evan when he was at the peak, basking in his glory. It also meant walking beside him as he waded through the darkness, supporting him every step of the way.
Tears poured down her cheeks as her mind drifted to every moment she had shared with Evan. Her mind lingered on the day they first met, on how the sight of him had tugged at her heart so badly.
Back then, Evan had been destitute.
He had absolutely nothing to his name. Even worse, he had been gravely injured as well. He had just undergone his hundredth blood transfusion, so his body had reached its absolute limit.
She had been the one who saved him.
At the time, everyone had found it unbelievable.
A noble heiress crossing paths with a frail, penniless nobody? That kind of thing only happened in cheesy TV
dramas.

create?
Instead of claiming that she’d saved him, it would be more prudent to say that they had saved each other. They had clung together for warmth in the seemingly never-ending, bitter winter.
That was why she was different from the girls who had come flocking to Evan when he rose to the top.
It wasn’t that those girls were lacking. It was just that she and Evan had been through far too much together.
She had saved his life while he had cured her of her terminal illness. Then, he had pulled Gaius back from the gates of death and driven out the evil afflicting Ivana.
There was far too much to recount. She could regale the others for three days and nights, but it still wouldn’t be enough time to finish her tale.
So, how could the others possibly compare?
Sylvie had a faint smile as she swept her gaze across her rivals gathered around her, Estelle included.
“I won’t claim I’m guaranteed to win Evan’s heart. But if there’s one thing I know, then it is the fact that I’ll stay by his side, come hell or high water. I can vow that I can stay by his side without asking for anything in return when he’s at rock bottom.
“Once he’s at the top, I can also promise that I can and will step back to sincerely wish him happiness if that’s what he needs.”
Estelle froze.
Sylvie’s words struck her like a bolt of lightning.
She couldn’t say a single word. She was shaken to the core as she now finally understood where she fell short.
It was experience.
She could only regret that she had met Evan far too late.
“Hmph! Sylvie, I admit your bond with Evan runs deep, but I’m not giving up that easily! You just got lucky. Still, it’s not too late for me. When it comes to staying by his side, I can do it just as well!” Estelle refused to back down.
Cheers and celebration filled the air outside the courthouse, forming a stark contrast to the dead silence within it.
No one had spoken another word ever since they heard Stefan’s furious bellow.
Instead, the commotion outside drew their attention.
“What are they doing out there?”
