“If that’s the case… then there’s no point in you trying anymore, Hazel…” he said softly, forcing a bitter smile. ” I’ve always known your parents don’t like me. I tried my best to change their minds, to earn their approval… but now it seems that day will never come.

“I probably won’t live long enough to see it anyway. They clearly don’t want me to survive. In their eyes, I’m the one who ruined things between you and Evan.

“Maybe it would be better if I just died. Once I’m gone, everyone will finally be happy.”

Zeke slipped effortlessly into that same pitiful act he had used on Evan before-one that had always worked without fail.

“Zeke!”

Seeing how weak and broken he looked, Hazel, Roxanne, and Anya panicked immediately. The faint, resigned smile on his face carried a sense of quiet despair that twisted their hearts.

“Zeke, don’t think like that. You’ll be fine…” Anya hurried to comfort him.

The very next second, she and Roxanne both turned sharply toward Hazel, their tone suddenly firm.

“Hazel, this is on you now. Mr. and Mrs. Solberg are your parents. You’re the one who has to deal with this.”
