Chapter 88 An Impatient Ivana
Evan had already set his utensils down. He knew Ivana wasn’t the Goldens’ backer. They mistook her simple message as full support. Graham was an idiot,
The hostility in the air was making the ladies nervous. Graham, however, looked at Hugo with confidence. “Do you really think I’d hold this event if I wasn’t fully prepared?
Hugo smiled. “And what exactly have you prepared?”
Graham sat up straighter, his eyes still locked onto Hugo. “I’d rather not answer if I could. It might shock you. But if you insist… Is the name Ivana Stanton familiar to you? Yes, the Queen of Finance is backing me. You should consider yourself fortunate that I’m willing to settle this with a simple apology.”
He thought Hugo would be spooked, but the guy didn’t move. Instead, Hugo scoffed.
Evan calmly resumed eating. He could already see how this would end.
Hugo didn’t believe a word. He probably knew what was really up before he came. The guy had a great information network, and given how he usually did things, he would have investigated beforehand.
Hugo narrowed his eyes and sneered. “Words are cheap, Graham. Why don’t you invite her here? If she shows up, then I’ll believe you.”
He had already investigated the matter. Ivana had no real ties to the Goldens.
Graham refused sternly, “Are you mad? Ms. Stanton is incredibly busy. She would never show up for something this trivial.” He thought Hugo didn’t believe he was telling the truth.
However, Hugo pressed on. “A call will suffice, then. What I need is confirmation.”
“Fine!” Graham called Ivana. He knew Hugo wouldn’t stop until they had confirmation.
An impatient voice answered, “Who is this?”
It was Ivana.
Graham looked at Hugo right away. His expression said it all. ‘Do you want to keep this up? She’s taken the call. You’re just going to embarrass yourself.’
Hugo gestured at Graham to continue.
“You don’t know when to quit.” Graham sneered quietly and leaned forward, putting on his most ingratiating smile. “Ms. Stanton, it’s me, Graham Golden. I hope I’m not interrupting. I just want to confirm if we’re
Ivana interrupted right away, “We’re what? We’re nothing. I don’t even know who you are! Graham, who?”
The whole room heard Ivana, and the air froze solid. Hugo’s men looked at Graham. Graham was stunned. His eyes were the size of saucers, and his face spelled disbelief.
Even the ladies thought they were hallucinating.
‘W-What? We’re nothing?’ they thought. ‘But it’s impossible! She called us yesterday just to say thank you!’
“But Ms. Stanton, the drakeblood root-
Before Graham could say any further, Ivana hung up. Graham and Anya couldn’t believe what just happened.
Hugo laughed mercilessly. “That’s what you call prepared? Your ‘backer’ doesn’t even know you!”
It was true, then. Graham had given away an absurdly valuable herb for nothing more than a simple thank you. And that single word had inflated his family’s confidence to this point.
