**When She Opened the Door to the Life She Was Afraid to Live by Nora Vale Kingsley**
**Chapter 425: Watching Over Remy**
“Ms. Tibarn, I… um…” Calum stuttered, his words faltering as he hesitated at the threshold.
“Don’t worry about it,” Emma reassured him, offering a gentle pat on his shoulder that seemed to ease the tension in the air. “Just go change into something comfortable, and then come back to join me. We need to keep an eye on Remy.”
Calum nodded, the weight of his nerves evident in his posture. “You can do what Marcus and the others are doing—grab a blanket and rest on the floor,” she added, noticing the quilts spread across the room.
When Calum had first walked in, he had spotted the quilts laid out neatly on the floor. Initially, he had assumed that Emma would prefer no one on the bed, and so they were all making do with what they had. But as he took a closer look, it became clear that everyone had come prepared, fully aware of Emma’s preferences.
Wrapping his blanket tightly around himself, Calum’s voice emerged rough and unsteady. “Ms. Tibarn, I’ll change and be right back.” He pivoted sharply on his heel and rushed out, his footsteps echoing down the hall.
Once he was gone, Emma turned her attention to Lucien, her brow furrowing slightly. “Go check on Drake. And for heaven’s sake, make sure he doesn’t show up dressed like that again.”
The mere thought of it made her cringe; it was far too awkward to bear.
“My lady, considering Mr. Smith’s personality, he wouldn’t choose to dress like that on his own,” Kieran interjected, a hint of defense in his tone as he stood by Drake’s side.
He knew Drake to be all business, a serious individual who would never stoop to such antics.
Silas couldn’t help but twitch the corner of his mouth in amusement. “Still, it’s better to check. What if he actually did?” His words were light-hearted, but the guilt that flickered in his eyes betrayed him.
Emma narrowed her gaze at Silas, suspicion creeping into her thoughts. “Silas, don’t tell me you’ve passed on your questionable fashion sense to him too?”
After all, Corvin and Edric had picked up a few of Silas’s tricks at home. Even Lucien occasionally borrowed Silas’s unique flair. It was hard for Emma not to suspect that he might have coached Drake in the same way.
Silas looked uncharacteristically sheepish. “Emy, I didn’t teach him anything. He just asked for my help in picking out two outfits, so I sent him a link…”
Emma fell silent, contemplating the implications of that statement.
“I’ll go check on Drake,” Lucien declared, breaking the tension. He shot Silas a look of disbelief before swiftly making his exit to find Drake.
In his own room, Drake had just slipped into a newly bought battle robe, which, in his mind, was a statement piece. He opened the door, expecting to see Emma waiting for him—but instead, he found Lucien already there, standing in the doorway, taking in the sight of Drake’s outfit. The corner of Lucien’s mouth twitched in disbelief.
Silas is unbelievable, he thought, shaking his head internally.
Drake’s so-called outfit barely qualified as clothing—just a few meager scraps that left much to be desired in terms of coverage.
Upon seeing Lucien, Drake’s face flushed a deep crimson. “Lucien, do you need something?” he asked, his voice tinged with nervousness.
