**When She Opened the Door to the Life She Was Afraid to Live by Nora Vale Kingsley**
**Chapter 497: Disgusting Chitnids**
“Calum has already gone after them. We’ll probably hear from him soon,” Emma’s heart fluttered with a mix of anxiety and relief.
As she absorbed this information, a sudden chill gripped her. Her eyes widened in horror when she witnessed Calum seize Silas by the ribbon tied around his neck, his voice rising in a panic, “Calum saw you like this, too?”
By the Beast God, was it possible that everyone had laid eyes on him in this state?
“No! No, he was already gone by the time I left the premises,” Silas replied hastily, his voice laced with urgency.
Emma inhaled deeply, releasing a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding.
“I don’t care what you do, but I don’t want him to see you like this,” she insisted, her tone firm yet tinged with an undercurrent of embarrassment.
She hadn’t crafted a gift like this for Calum yet; it felt too soon, too intimate. They weren’t mates yet, and the uncertainty gnawed at her. What if he found her gesture overwhelming?
After all, the last set of sleepwear he donned was nowhere near this audacious.
In truth, the sleepwear she had gifted Edric was far more modest compared to Silas’.
With a determined shake of her head, Emma ceased her playful banter with Silas.
She hurriedly dressed and splashed water on her face, the coldness invigorating her senses. By the time she completed her morning routine, Calum had returned, looking as composed as ever.
Seeing him safe brought her a wave of comfort. “Calum, Silas mentioned an unusual energy disturbance earlier. Did you discover anything?” she asked, her curiosity piqued.
“I caught a few Chitnids,” Calum replied, his grin revealing a hint of mischief. “I interrogated them on the way back. They’ve been lurking around here with the intent to abduct pregnant females.”
“Pregnant females?” Emma’s brow furrowed in confusion, her mind racing with questions. “What could they possibly want with pregnant females? They didn’t manage to abduct anyone, did they?”
“They actually did manage to capture one,” Calum said, his expression shifting to one of concern.
He took her hand, his touch warm and reassuring. “Don’t worry. I rescued her. She’s back with her mates now.”
Emma felt a wave of relief wash over her as she absorbed the news.
Yet, the question still lingered in her mind. “But why would the Chitnids want to abduct pregnant females?”
Calum hesitated, searching for the right words, wanting to shield her from the darker realities of their world.
Before he could gently articulate his thoughts, Edric interjected, his voice steady and informative. “The Chitnids have very few females. As a result, they’ll resort to any means necessary to capture them.”
“And they target pregnant females because they believe those females are fertile. Is that why this is happening?” Emma asked, her voice barely above a whisper, the gravity of the situation sinking in.
Calum nodded solemnly. “Exactly.”
The implications were horrifying. Those Chitnids were transforming pregnant females into breeding machines.
“That’s absolutely dreadful,” Emma murmured, her mind racing back to the grotesque creature she had encountered before. The image of its face, riddled with eyes, resurfaced vividly in her memory, and she felt a wave of nausea rise in her throat.
Her complexion paled as she instinctively covered her mouth, trying to suppress the rising tide of revulsion.
