“Calum, it’s really not what you think,” Emma said, biting her lip when she mind raced as she tried to figure out how to explain it.

“Marshal, you really did misunderstand.” A cool, familiar male voice suddenly came from Emma’s arms.

Calum froze.

His expression stiffened as he stared down in disbelief at the pitch–black, chubby bird she was holding.

That voice…

“Lucien?”

“It’s me.” Lucien sighed, hopping out of Emma’s arms and landing on the floor. In the next second, he returned to his human form.

“It’s really you…” Calum’s eyes practically popped out of his head. “Why would you turn into something that ugly?”

Is there something wrong with this guy’s head? Why would he transform into something that hideous for no reason?

What shocked Calum the most was that he hadn’t sensed Lucien’s aura at all earlier. He had genuinely thought it was just a strangely black, ugly bird.

Lucien didn’t answer. He only looked at Emma with an unmistakable grievance in his eyes.

Emma felt even guiltier under that look. She awkwardly touched the bridge of her nose, cleared her throat, and explained in a low voice, “Um… I was the one who asked him to transform.”

“You asked him to?” Calum stared at her, confusion written all over his handsome face. He genuinely couldn’t understand her taste.

Lucien’s phoenix form was far more beautiful. Why would she prefer seeing him as a black, ugly bird?

Calum was baffled, but he decided to respect Emma’s aesthetic sense.

He didn’t ask any more questions. Still, thinking back on what had just happened made him feel a little awkward.

“Ahem… well…” Calum cleared his throat. “I just remembered I still have some things to take care of. You two go ahead and talk. I’ll head back first.”

With that, he left in a hurry.

The door closed behind him with a soft click, and the room fell silent.

Watching Calum flee in embarrassment, Emma wanted to laugh, yet she also felt bad for him.

She turned around, about to say something to Lucien–only to meet a pair of eyes filled with grievance.

“Well, this is just great now,” Lucien said gloomily, his tone full of accusation. “Calum’s seen this ugly form of mine too. He’s definitely going to laugh at me from now on.”

“He won’t. No, he won’t!” Emma hurried over, cupped his face, and kissed him. “Calum isn’t that kind of person. I’ll go talk to him later. I’ll tell him he’s not allowed to laugh at you. If anyone dares to mock you, I’ll take it personally.”

She made the promise earnestly, her eyes full of sincerity.

“Hmph.” Lucien let out a soft snort through his nose, but he clearly wasn’t truly angry.

He turned and walked unhurriedly to the door, lifting his hand.

The crisp sound of the lock echoed clearly in the quiet room, making Emma’s heart jump for no reason at all.

Why is he locking the door? Is he about to settle accounts with me?

Emma watched as Lucien slowly turned back and walked toward her step by step.

Backlit by the light, his handsome face was hard to read, but his deep eyes were locked onto her, carrying an unmistakable sense of pressure.

“Lucien?” Emma instinctively shrank back a little.

Lucien stopped in front of her. His long fingers lifted her chin, forcing her to meet his

gaze.

“What did you promise Calum?” he asked, narrowing his eyes. His voice was low and magnetic, like aged wine spreading warmly beside her ear.

“I…” Emma stammered, unable to say a single word. How could she possibly bring herself to say something like that out loud?

Seeing her cheeks slowly turn red, Lucien curved his lips into a faint smile.

“Don’t want to say it?” He chuckled softly, leaning down as his warm breath brushed against her lips. “That’s fine. I’ve already guessed.”

Before the last word fully fell, he lowered his head and kissed her.

When the kiss ended, Lucien scooped Emma up and carried her toward the bed. “Emma, you wanted to see Coalball, and I let you. You can’t be stingy either…”

By the time Emma finally came out of the room, it was already lunchtime.

She couldn’t help shooting him a fierce glare. He had definitely learned something new from Silas. His tricks were getting more and more refined.

Sensing her gaze, Lucien looked up and gave her an especially innocent expression. With elegant, unhurried movements, he picked up his fork, as if the clingy, seductive menace from that morning had never existed.

He genuinely felt he hadn’t done much–just kissed her for a while. That was all.

After lunch, Remy, who had slept through the entire morning, finally woke up.

Emma had missed him after not seeing him all morning. Now that he was awake, she stayed in the living room to play with him for a bit.

When Remy grew hungry, and it was time for him to absorb beast cores, Emma placed them beside him. With Lucien and Silas watching over Remy, she got up and went to Calum’s room.
