Calum’s tone was icy. “Whatever the amount is, settle it with my adjutant. And this incident will not be mentioned again.”

“Understood.”

The pair immediately looked much more at ease. “Then we’ll take our leave, Marshal.”

That was all they needed.

Without Calum’s approval, there was no way his adjutant would have released even a single coin.

The call ended.

Calum sent Lucien a message. “The Administrative Department came to collect payment from me. Add this to your bill.”

Lucien had already reached the point where resistance was pointless. And so, he replied, “Fine.”

That night, Jim and Marcus finally woke after sleeping through the entire day. Still unaware of everything that had happened, they headed downstairs for dinner.

The moment they entered, they saw that the whole family was there.

Even Silas, who was usually too swamped to appear, had shown up.

But something about everyone’s expression was off.

Marcus dropped into his seat and looked around, puzzled. “That’s rare. Everyone’s actually home, and we’re even eating together. So why do you all look like a funeral just happened? What went on?”

Jim said nothing. His eyes moved quietly from one face to another around the table.

Corvin looked at Marcus and answered weakly, like a man whose soul had already left his body, “Don’t ask. It was mortifying.”

“Mortifying?”

Marcus lit up on the spot. “What happened? Tell me.”

Corvin had just opened his mouth when Kieran suddenly placed a piece of beast rib onto his plate.

“Corvin, you had a rough day. Eat a little more.”

Corvin was cut off and could only thank him politely.

Before he could try again, Edric spoke first. “Corvin had an accident while showering today. His towel came off.”

Marcus burst out laughing before he could stop himself. Then he immediately realized that was probably a terrible response and straightened up to look at Corvin.

“It’s okay, Corvin. We’re all males here. Don’t dwell on it.”

Corvin was a little stunned that Marcus was actually trying to comfort him.

He wanted to explain that it had not just been a towel issue, but before he could get a word in, Alaric calmly added vegetables to his plate.

“Corvin, that’s enough. Let it stay in the past. If it keeps coming up, everyone’s going to start feeling awkward. Besides, Marcus is helping Lucien look after the cubs tonight.”

The second the cubs came up, even Lucien, their biological father, looked exhausted.

He glanced at Marcus, then at Jim. “I’ve got a military meeting tonight. Marcus and Jim can handle the cubs.”

Paying compensation was one thing. Losing face was another.

And if shame had to land on someone tonight, there was no reason it had to be him.

Marcus narrowed his eyes at Lucien. “You’re sure they’re not going to cry tonight?”

He genuinely suspected Lucien was making an escape because the cubs still needed soothing at night.

“They won’t cry.” Lucien confirmed it with complete seriousness.

Malrik backed him up at once. “That part’s true. Silas‘ method worked. They’ve stopped crying.”

“Alright then.” Marcus finally eased up. If the cubs were sleeping quietly, then no problem.

Still, the whole thing felt suspicious. He just could not figure out why.

No matter. He figured would know soon enough.

If the cubs started crying again, he would drag everyone in the house out of bed. There was no universe where he and Jim were dealing with that alone.

The moment dinner was over, Lucien left so fast it was almost suspicious.

He looked like there was some terrifying beast in the house chasing him out the door.

The others also returned to their rooms earlier than usual.

Silas left with Remy as soon as dinner ended.
