“I’m sorry, but I’m just not interested in you.”

Corvin had once told her that when a male came on too strong and you weren’t clear enough in turning him down, he’d take that hesitation as some hidden sign of interest.
That would only encourage him to keep chasing after her relentlessly.
“Goodness, she really shut him down that fast?”
Someone nearby let out a hushed gasp of surprise.
“Wow, straight to the point. She didn’t even give him her contact information…”
“Still, even when she’s turning someone down, Emma manages to stay polite about it. She even led with an apology.”
Helsing hadn’t expected someone who looked this gentle to reject him so bluntly, and he stood there completely frozen in place.
Kaet had never once mentioned anything about his history with Emma back within their bloodline.
So, Helsing had absolutely no idea about the connection between Emma and Kael.
Rejected on the spot, Helsing’s gaze drifted almost instinctively toward Silas.
Back at the Executive Department, the two of them usually managed to exchange a few words here and there.
Now, having just been shut down so directly by Emma, Helsing looked to Silas, silently pleading for a rescue.
After all, they both worked at the Executive Department, and if he could build some kind of bond with Silas, he figured he could eventually return the favor down the line.
He’d assumed that, as colleagues, Silas would at least put in a good word for him.
Instead, Silas simply lowered his gaze and reached up with slender, elegant fingers to gently tuck a stray strand of hair behind Emma’s ear, his touch effortless and tender.
Only then did he turn to Helsing with a warm, easy smile.
Meeting that gentle expression, Helsing’s heart lifted with hope, just as he started to believe Silas might actually speak up on his
behalf.
“My huntress already made herself perfectly clear,” Silas said calmly, his voice quiet but carrying the rich, cultured tone of a cello, laced with an absolute weight of authority that made knees go weak.
“She’s not interested in you.”
Silas offered Helsing no room whatsoever to argue.
The truth was simple. He held nothing but contempt for these arrogant, self–important fools from the Suncrest Lineage.
Meeting Silas‘ gaze, Helsing felt an invisible weight of mental power press down onto his shoulders like a collapsing mountain

Cold sweat instantly beaded across his forehead. “I… I’m sorry to have bothered you, Emma…”
Helsing stammered out that hurried apology and spun around, practically fleeing the scene.

Every single guest in that hall felt the crushing wave of that mental power roll through the room, their faces draining of color. The eager young males who’d been buzzing with restless anticipation moments before suddenly sobered up completely, as though someone had doused them all in ice water.
Off in the distance, Gaellard watched the whole exchange unfold and turned to Andre with a smug, raised eyebrow.
“You know, I’m suddenly realizing Emma’s actually been pretty gentle with the two of us this whole time.
“Sure, she’s never shown interest in either of us, but at least she’s never outright rejected us like that.”
Andre glanced over at Gaellard.
“Why don’t you go find out for yourself, then? Let’s see if Emma turns you down just as fast.”
The reason Emma had never explicitly rejected either of them was simple. Neither of them had ever given her the chance to reject them in the first place.
Gaellard rolled his eyes in exasperation.
“Why would I do that? I’m here to protect Emma quietly from the shadows, not to confess my feelings to her.”
He wasn’t foolish enough to hand Emma an easy opportunity to shut him down outright.
Andre said nothing further and simply let his gaze drift away, calm and unbothered.
He stood tucked in the shadows, his whole presence seeming to melt seamlessly into the darkness around him.
Yet those ice blue eyes of his never once strayed from Emma, remaining locked on her without a single break.
Outside, Aria, dressed in her formal gown, hurried down from her ship with several of her partners trailing close behind.
“Come on, you three, pick up the pace,” she called back over her shoulder.
Her brother had just texted her, letting her know Emma had already arrived.

Moving as quickly as she was, Aria failed to notice a young male walking toward her, and the two of them collided head on.
“Oh!”
Aria stumbled backward from the impact, though thankfully her reflexes kept her from actually falling.
Everything had happened so fast that her partners hadn’t even had time to react, and the moment they saw Aria get knocked into their hearts leaped straight into their throats.
“Huntress, are you alright?” one of them asked urgently.
Once they confirmed Aria was fine, they turned their attention to the male who’d bumped into her.
“Watch where you’re walking,” one snapped. “Did you not see our huntress coming through?”

I’m so sorry, I’m terribly sorry…”

The man kept his head bowed low, apologizing over and over, his voice clear and cool like flowing spring water, trembling slightly with obvious panic and distress.
Aria hadn’t really been all that upset in the first place, since she knew perfectly well she’d been the one rushing carelessly when they collided.
Besides, she was in a hurry to get inside and find Emma, and she had no interest in making a big deal out of something this minor.
Just as Aria opened her mouth to reassure him that everything was fine, the male standing before her, who’d kept his head lowered this whole time, suddenly lifted his face, and the words she’d been about to say caught hard in her throat
The instant she got a clear look at his face, even Aria, who’d grown thoroughly accustomed to handsome males over the years, felt her breath catch for one stunned moment.
He was breathtaking.
The male standing in front of her looked almost like some fragile piece of art too delicate and precious to ever touch.
His long hair fell in a pure, moonlit silver, a few strands tousled slightly from their collision, brushing against cheeks so pale they seemed almost translucent.
His eyes carried an extraordinarily clear, pale glasslike blue, like still spring water, and right now they glistened faintly with the
sheen of obvious nervousness.
Beneath his pale eye, a single blood red tear shaped mark rested delicately on his skin, and paired with the soft tremble of his long lashes, it lent him an aching, fragile beauty, the kind that made you want to reach out and shelter him from the world.
Aria’s gaze drifted slowly from his face down to the plain white shirt he wore.
For someone this stunning to look at, he wore an unbelievably cheap, thin white shirt. It looked freshly washed and clean, but standing among all these richly dressed nobles, it
