Cornbread muffins are a breeze to whip up. After just a couple of hours in the kitchen, voilà – a whole batch steaming hot from the pot.

Grandma, looking at the little golden mounds, wore a nostalgic smile that bathed her whole being in kindness.

Out of the blue, she mused, “These cornbread muffins take me back. When I was a girl, my hometown was hit by a famine... these were a rare treat. After I moved to the city, I'd make them from time to time. Now, in my twilight years, I find myself longing for those days when the family would gather around to share this simple meal.”

She continued, her eyes distant with memory, “I remember... my eldest, about the same age as this young lady here,” she gestured toward Emily, “there was this ragamuffin at our door, as pretty as a picture. At first glance, I mistook him for a girl... turned out to be a boy, nearly fainting from hunger. I gave him a couple of these muffins and some pickles... After scarfing them down, he asked if there were any more... but that was it, just those last two and they were cold, no less.”

“That kid must've been starving,” she pondered.

Stephanie chuckled, “Grandma, you've always had such a big heart.”

Emily, curious, asked, “What happened next? Did you take in that little ragamuffin?”

“Oh, heavens no... We were barely scraping by ourselves, couldn't even properly feed our own kids, let alone someone else's.”

Stephanie laughed, “You've been living here for so many years, Grandma. Mom and I only moved in later, didn't we?”

“That's right... Your grandfather, God rest his soul, was a local. When I married and moved here from my hometown, it was like joining a whole new world! Oh, how times have changed... Now, people in the city can't wait to escape to the countryside, but it's not so easy to switch back.”
