Even she hadn't realized the bruising on her wrist was this severe.
It honestly didn't hurt much, but it looked terrifying.
Her flawless, luminous skin had always marked easily.
Not to mention, she had no idea just how much force he had used on her last night.
To say she wasn't resentful would be a lie.
But since he claimed not to remember anything, she forced herself to stop dwelling on it.
The less she cared, the more it proved she was truly over their relationship.
As for last night... she would just treat it like getting bitten by a rabid dog.
Edmond desperately wanted to apply the ointment for her, but she was clearly capable of doing it herself.
By the time she finished, Tilly was practically vibrating with sympathy.
The toddler gently held her fingertips and pressed several soft kisses to the back of her hand.
Edmond watched in utter silence.
He felt a mixture of speechlessness and profound relief.
His daughter was doing exactly what he desperately wanted to do.
He was almost jealous.
Reaching out, he scooped up his precious little girl and kissed her chubby cheek affectionately.
She kissed Sheila, and he kissed her.
By the transitive property of toddler kisses... he had practically kissed Sheila himself.
With the medicine applied, she prepared to take Tilly to the playroom.
That way, she wouldn't have to look at his face anymore.
Sure enough, when they headed to the playroom, he didn't follow.
They played until well past eleven, and it was finally time for her to leave.
She made a promise to the little girl that she would come back to play in the afternoon.
Children were actually quite reasonable if you took the time to explain things properly.
Tilly's only real fear was never seeing her again.
But since she had promised to return and hadn't broken her word, a short separation was perfectly acceptable to the toddler.
By almost nine o'clock, there was still no sign of her.
He looked at his daughter. "Why isn't she here yet? Do you think she forgot? Should we call her?"
During every one of her visits, even though he didn't hover—having promised to keep his distance—he still made his presence known.
He would occasionally pop in to grab water, take a phone call nearby, or casually chat with Tilly for a few moments.
He made sure he was absolutely impossible to ignore.
But now, Tilly simply said, "She took the day off!"
"Took the day off?"
"She said she's busy, so she's not coming!"
His lips pressed into a thin line. "Did she say what she was busy with?"
"I don't know!"
Just as he was about to press further, his phone rang.
Seeing the caller ID, he walked into his study.
Vivienne Adler's accusatory voice immediately pierced through the speaker: "Where are you hiding that little bitch?"
