She said, "I'll eat by myself in a minute."
But Tilly wasn't happy with that. She just went quiet, staring at Sheila with those huge, beautiful eyes.
Sheila had absolutely zero resistance against her.
Left with no other option, she picked up a spare utensil, leaned over, and took a bite.
Tilly blinked her big eyes. "Let Daddy feed you!"
Despite her age, she already knew how to feed herself.
But adults loved being pampered, let alone children.
Being pampered was always more comfortable than doing things yourself.
The little girl just wanted her favorite person to enjoy the same luxury.
Thinking for a second, she added, "Daddy is great at feeding!"
Sheila thought to herself, *I knew how good your dad was at feeding way before you did.*
Two adults with a tangled history of love and heartbreak were masking all their tension for the sake of a child.
Maintaining a perfect illusion of peace.
Edmond offered the spoon toward his daughter's mouth. "Ms. Jensen had her bite, now it's your turn."
He adamantly stuck to calling her "Ms. Jensen."
Using her first name would just make things too confusing.
Tilly kept her mouth clamped shut and shook her head.
Edmond's expression darkened, and his tone dropped. "Tilly, open up."
Tilly had never been yelled at by him before. Scared, she immediately buried her face in Sheila's chest.
Sheila instantly went into protective mode. "Why are you yelling at her? If you don't want to feed her, I will!"
Edmond's voice grew even colder. "She's my daughter."
Sheila was infuriated but couldn't find a single word to argue back.
It was a fact she couldn't change.
No matter how much she loved Tilly, she couldn't override blood ties.
She could only softly coax the little girl. "Be a good girl, Tilly. Eat up, and I'll play games with you."
She had planned on making sure Tilly ate, letting the IV finish, and then slipping out.
Sheila patiently explained, "Tilly, Daddy can only feed you, he can't feed me."
Tilly's tiny brain was full of big questions. "Why?"
"Because... you're Daddy's daughter, and I'm not." Sheila quickly scooped some food for herself and popped it into her mouth. "See, my turn is done. Now you."
Kids are incredibly perceptive; they know exactly where an adult's limits are.
This time, she gave a quiet "Oh" and didn't push it any further.
Edmond, however, was clearly annoyed. After feeding Tilly the next bite, he muttered, "You're such a little tyrant."
It was hard to tell exactly who he was talking to.
After all, he used to say that exact phrase to Sheila too.
The memories were too aggressive, refusing to obey her commands and constantly forcing their way out of the depths of her mind.
Sheila felt totally out of place.
Thankfully, Tilly cooperated for the rest of the meal.
The moment the little girl was finally full, Sheila was desperate to put some distance between herself and Edmond.
