Neeko lay sprawled across the sun–warmed flagstones near the altar, lazily toying with a little trinket Riley had returned to her earlier.
Riley perched on the edge of the altar platform in the yard, holding the Unidentified Beast Egg she’d picked up in last night’s trade.
The egg was huge–almost the size of a microwave oven. Its shell was dull and mottled with patches of gray, cool to the touch. It can’t be just a dud, can it? But since it had basically been a freebie thrown into last night’s “clearance deal“, Riley couldn’t help feeling skeptical.
“Might as well see if it hatches,” she muttered to herself.
She stood up and pulled up the building menu. If she was going to incubate an egg, leaving it out in the open snow wasn’t going to cut it.
“Build: Basic Wooden Shed
“Cost: Wood x10, Straw x10”
After a few minutes of hammering and clattering, a tidy little wooden shed stood beside the altar.
It reminded her a lot of the shed she used to have back home, but this time she didn’t cut corners. She lined the floor with a thick layer of straw, then laid two pieces of tanned hide over it to help trap warmth.
The best part was the shed’s location–right next to the Basic Elemental Altar. The steady, gentle heat radiating from the altar worked like a perfect natural incubator.
Riley carefully settled the egg into the hide–lined nest.
“No clue what’s gonna come out of this thing.”
She gave the shell a light tap. “Just don’t be some useless rooster that does nothing but crow all day. If it is, I guess it’s chicken soup for dinner. But with an egg this big… probably not a chicken.”
Neeko crouched by the shed’s entrance, peering inside with wide, curious eyes.
With the egg taken care of, Riley turned her attention to the three Strange Black Seeds in her palm.

The description called them “photophobic plants” that needed to grow in complete darkness.
Riley thought it over, then dug out a blueprint she’d been saving.
“Blueprint: Basic Indoor Grow Chamber”
It was originally meant for growing vegetables indoors year–round–a fully climate–controlled setup. But it would work just fine for these oddballs.
Back inside the main house, Riley picked the darkest corner of the living room, behind the large sectional sofa.
“Craft.”
A soft flash of light later, a waist–high square metal chamber appeared. It was fully sealed, with a dark viewing window on the front–pitch black inside for now.
Riley opened the door, loosened the rich soil inside, buried the three black seeds, and gave them a light sprinkle of water.
Just to be safe, she found a thick piece of black felt and draped it tightly over the whole unit, leaving only the ventilation holes uncovered.
“A gray egg, three black seeds.”
Riley brushed the soil off her hands and glanced at the two projects tucked away in their corners. “Total mystery boxes.”
The thrill of survival games lay in that lingering sense of uncertainty–the not knowing what lay ahead. Who could tell? One day, she might lift back that black cloth only to uncover a man- eating plant, or a fire–breathing dragon might burst forth from the egg.
You had to have something to look forward to.
With that done, Riley stretched and sank back into the couch.
“Time to check in on TartKing.”
She opened her private messages and found TartKing.
Ever since TartKing got those Magic Pumpkin Seeds, Riley had been curious. Magic–grade seeds were nothing to sneeze at.

“SpicyBurger: Morning, TartKing. How’d that pumpkin seed turn out? Any growth?”
The reply came almost instantly.
