“TartKing: I’m awake too! Man, thank god I was sleeping in that vest you gave me otherwise, those things would’ve torn my heart straight out!
“TartKing: Don’t you worry about me! I’m hangin‘ in there! These damn rats tried to get into my flour stash, so now I’m gonna fight the little bastards till the end!”
Riley listened to the shaky but stubborn voice in the voice message, and the tight knot in her chest finally loosened a little.
Her fingers hovered over the keyboard. Finally, she dragged that “Waypoint Teleportation Card” back into the deepest corner of her inventory.
“You sure you can hold out? I’ve got a teleport card. If it gets too bad, I can pull you out.”
That was her final check–in.
“TartKing: No! Don’t you dare!
“TartKing: Save that card for a real emergency, boss! This is nothing! Besides… I can’t just hide behind you and freeload forever.
“TartKing: I’m a Level 7 survivor too! Yeah, I’m a cook–but cooks know how to use knives! Just watch, I’ll turn these rats into sushi!”
Reading those lines, Riley felt something warm bloom deep inside her chest.
That kid who used to cry and beg for carries, who spent her days baking sweets and acting cute, had finally grown some teeth when life and death were on the line.
She didn’t say, “Come save me.” She said, “I’m gonna fight the little bastards.”
That was the apocalypse for you.
It could turn people into monsters, but it could also turn cowards into fighters.
Good for her.

“SpicyBurger: Take it. Don’t hold back on my account. Just survive. Tomorrow, I want to try a new cake flavor.”
“TartKing: Yes, boss! I’ll make it count!”
She closed the chat window.

Riley tightened her grip on her bow again.
If her teammate was fighting for her life, how could she–the so–called “big shot“-afford to slack off?

Standing atop the watchtower, Riley raised her voice, cutting through the howling wind and snow. “Neeko! Let’s pick up the pace! We’re not letting these dann rats chew through our home!”
Riley stopped holding back with her arrows. She even started mixing in some of those precious “Explosive Arrows“.
“Boom! Boom!”
Fire erupted beyond the wall, blasting clusters of giant rats into the air.
One rat managed to slip through and scramble up the watchtower. It bared its reeking jaws, aiming straight for Riley’s ankle.
Riley didn’t even glance down. She pulled the Storm Splitter Dual Axes from her belt and brought one down in a heavy, merciless chop.
“Thwump!”
The rat was cleaved clean in half. Filthy blood splattered across Riley’s goggles.
She wiped it away with the back of her hand, her gaze turning even sharper.
That night felt like it would never end.
The roars and shrieks of monsters blended into one grim, endless symphony of death.
Riley swung her axes and drew her bow without stopping.
When her arms began to burn, she took a swig of an Energy Drink,
When she took a hit, she chugged a Healing Potion.
Finally, a weak glimmer of dawn fought its way through the thick cloud cover.
The wind and snow gradually eased.
“Squeak… squeak…”
The rat swarm, which had been attacking in a frenzy, seemed to get some kind of retreat signal–or maybe they were afraid of the approaching daylight. They began to pull back like a receding tide.
Those too slow to escape let out sharp, pitiful cries as the morning light touched them, dissolving into curls of black smoke.
“Is it… over?”

Riley teaned against the watchtower railing, breathing hard.

Her work clothes were splattered with dark bloodstains. The blades of her axes had taken on a deep, dull red from all the hacking.
Down in the yard, the scene was a mess.
The planting beds had survived, but the ground was littered with monster remains and gore. Neeko had collapsed from exhaustion, reverting to her human form. She sat hugging her knees, breathing heavily, her body covered in scrapes and bruises.
