Description: A cunning creature that usually hides in the embers. Under the influence of the Long Night, it has evolved into a literal killing machine.
“Only Level 14?”
Pineapple Beer hissed through her teeth, flipping her daggers into a reverse grip. “You’ve got to be kidding me. With that speed, I’d believe you if you told me it was a Level 25 Assassin Boss!”
“Its stats are tripled,” Riley said, her voice dropping an octave. “On paper, this thing probably hits harder than that Scorpion King we just killed.”
Having tanked the first hit, Riley felt the serpent’s raw power more than anyone.
The Ash Serpent coiled its body again.
Enraged by Riley’s previous axe strike, the black miasma clinging to its scales flared up, making its ash- grey hide look even more demonic.
“Hiss!”
It lunged—but not at Riley. It blurred past her, aiming straight for TartKing!
PineappleBeer vanished from her spot.
Shadow Step!
A heartbeat later, she materialized directly in the serpent’s path, her daggers driving toward its flank.
Clang!
The blades sparked against the scales, dealing far less damage than expected, but it was enough to stagger
the beast.
“Dammit, its skin is like iron!” Pineapple Beer shouted.
She used the momentum to pull a backflip, narrowly avoiding a lethal swipe from the serpent’s tail.
In the rear, TartKing scrambled to find a safe angle, her hands never stopping as she rained golden light onto Riley and PineappleBeer.
The golden light hit Riley and PineappleBeer in rhythmic waves.
Riley charged back in. Her Constitution was miles ahead of the other two; she had to be the one to soak

the aggro.
Thud! Bang! Crash!
At the edge of the woods, the trio engaged the frenzied snake in a chaotic brawl.
Even with Riley and Pineapple Beer working in perfect sync, their expressions remained grim.
The thing was too durable.
And its regeneration was insane.
Riley watched as a deep gash she’d just carved into the snake’s side knit itself back together in seconds, fueled by that pulsing black energy.
We can’t keep this up, Riley thought, parrying a tail lash as her mind raced.
She kept a sharp eye on the battlefield.
The Ash Serpent was aggressive, but its movement was restricted.
It hugged the edge of the thick black fog, refusing to slither even an inch toward the troop’s camp.
Whenever Riley tried to kite it inward, the snake would twist violently, preferring to take a hit rather than step away from the darkness.
“The light…”
Riley looked back at the three massive tree hollows.
Hundreds of apes were huddled inside, the entrances stacked with glowing blue crystals that turned the clearing into a pocket of artificial day.
Why did the monkeys stockpile the glowing stones?
“PineappleBeer! TartKing!”
Riley’s eyes flashed with realization. “These things are allergic to the glow!”
PineappleBeer blinked, then a grin spread across her face. “That explains why it’s hugging the shadows like a coward!”
“If it won’t come to the party, we’ll bring the party to it!”
Riley scanned the terrain, formulating a plan.
The serpent was currently perched on a boulder at the very edge of the mist, its black aura at peak intensity.
“Pineapple Beer! Buy me five seconds!”

Pineapple Beer didn’t ask questions. She whipped out her arbalest, unleashing a volley of bolts before rolling forward to engage the beast point–blank.
Previously harassed by her sneak attacks, the Ash Serpent hissed in fury as she charged it head–on, lunging directly at her.
Knowing she wasn’t there to win, but to distract, PineappleBeer ignored her own defense.
She dumped every skill she had into the serpent’s face.
Stung by the assault, the serpent instinctively tried to recoil back toward the black mist to recover.
But as it turned, Riley was already behind it.
She tucked her axes away and lowered her shoulder.
Charge!
A gale erupted around Riley as she became a living battering ram, slamming into the serpent.
BOOM!
The serpent’s massive bulk was actually lifted off the ground, flying through the air before crashing down right in the center of the illuminated zone.
Sizzle–!!!
The sound was enough to make one’s skin crawl.
The moment the serpent hit the light, the thick black miasma covering it began to boil and evaporate like mist in a furnace.
“SCREE–!!!”
The once–terrifying Ash Serpent let out a blood–curdling shriek. It thrashed wildly on the ground as its scales began to soften and slough off, revealing raw, red flesh beneath.
