Riley watched the chat scroll by; eighty percent of the messages were praising her, which made her feel a bit self–conscious.

She closed the blinding leaderboard and was about to check the legendary rewards in her bag when the front door of her cabin was kicked open with a loud “Bang!”

“Riley!!”

Riley barely had time to stash her loot before she opened her arms to catch the small “Sylvie–projectile” known as Neeko.

“Oof!”

The impact forced Riley back half a step, her boots crunching into the snow.

The girl in her arms was vibrating with excitement, her fuzzy cat ears twitching non–stop as she buried her face into Riley’s neck.

“Riley! You’re finally home! Neeko missed you so much!”

The girl’s voice was soft and sweet.

Riley reached up and gently stroked Neeko’s soft hair, giving her sensitive cat ears a playful squeeze.

Her voice softened instinctively. “I’m back, aren’t I? And I shouldn’t have to leave again for a while.”

“Really?”

Neeko looked up, her heterochromatic eyes shimmering with tears, her nose red from the cold. She looked incredibly precious and vulnerable. Riley was telling the truth; there probably wouldn’t be another instance for some time.

“Of course.”

Riley smiled and wiped a tear from the girl’s eye before adopting a mock–stern expression. “However… while I was gone, has someone been slacking off on their chores?”

Riley asked playfully, having already spotted the new lumber pile and the small shed in the yard. She wanted to give Neeko a chance to show off.

“No way!”

Neeko’s face puffed up like a steamed bun at the accusation.

She leaped off Riley and stood with her hands on her hips, her tail swishing angrily behind her.

“Neeko was not lazy! Neeko worked super hard!!”

Determined to prove her point, Neeko grabbed Riley’s hand and practically dragged her into the yard.

“Riley, look! Just look!”

Riley allowed herself to be pulled along.

On the left side of the previously empty yard, a literal mountain of lumber was stacked neatly.

Riley stepped forward and used the system to salvage the wood.

“And there’s more! Look!”

Neeko looked up with a “praise me” expression, pulling Riley to the other corner of the yard.

A makeshift wooden shed stood there. The structure was a bit crooked and wobbly, but it was enough to keep the snow off.

Under the shed, a massive pile of black smokeless coal was stacked high.

But the biggest surprise was the object parked next to the coal–a literal mine cart!
