Riley didn’t send too much; she just wanted to join the mood without broadcasting her true wealth.
The group chat exploded instantly.
“Random_A: Holy crap! 50 units of coal?! Even with the crash, that’s a small fortune!”
“FrostWolf: Thanks, Riley! I hit the jackpot! Snagged 10 units! I burned through my stash last night, I really needed this!”
“Tray: Wolf, have you no shame? You’re already loaded and you’re taking the jackpot?!”
“FrostWolf: Hey, every little bit counts!”
“Knife: I got some too! I can finally breathe easy. Riley is the best!”
:ToxicReaper: Got mine. Feeling secure now. GG, Boss!”
“TartKing: Hehe, I got some too! Riley is the greatest!”
“Table: Looks like the Boss made a killing during the volatility too! Thanks for sharing the wealth.”
Riley watched the “Thank you, Riley” messages scroll by and didn’t bother correcting them. If they thought she just made a lucky trade, all the better for her privacy.
She thought for a moment before posting one final tip:
“SpicyBurger: Don’t sweat the short–term prices. In the wastes, energy and food are the only things that truly matter. No matter the narrative, as long as you have coal and grain, you’re fine.”
“SpicyBurger: Keep a tight grip on your high–tier fuel. Don’t sell it even if the ratio hits 1:1. Your life is worth more than a few coins.”
“Knife: Riley knows best! I’m locking my stash down!”

“Nobody: Yeah! The wind has been getting really loud lately, and those burrowing bugs are everywhere. I went mining and the ground felt harder than usual.”
“Random_A: Roger that! If the Boss says lock it down, I’m being a miser until the end of time!”
Riley nodded in satisfaction as the “Roger” and “Locked in” messages filled the screen.
That was the right move.
As long as these people didn’t let the Golden Rose shills trick them into giving up survival line, they’d be okay.

Night deepened, the fire in the hearth softening until only a few glowing embers remained.
Neeko had her own room now, so she no longer had to curl up as a kitten to squeeze into Riley’s bed.
Ash, the greedy bird, was surprisingly well–behaved, sleeping on the TV stand with his head tucked under a wing.
Riley added a few more lumps of coal to the fire, checked the locks, and confirmed the Hawkeye feed was stable before heading to the master bedroom.
She slept soundly that night.
Until the next morning, when a series of rapid pings woke her up.
Beep–beep–beep! Beep–beep–beep!
Riley groggily reached out from under the duvet, fumbling at the bedside before remembering the system was displayed on her retinas.
She squinted her eyes, swiping at the air to open the menu.
It was a message from the “Hustle Crew.”
“PineappleBeer: @SpicyBurger @TartKing Wake up! Stop sleeping! Something big is happening!”
“Pineapple Beer: Check the system announcements! Global special chests are spawning!” “PineappleBeer: Riley! Get up! A Platinum Chest just appeared!”
Riley snapped her eyes open, the last of her sleepiness vanishing at the word “Platinum.”

She sat bolt upright, her fingers flying across the holographic interface.
Sure enough, a bright yellow banner was pinned to the top of her vision.
“System Announcement: Winter Carnival event initiated!”
“Description: The system will randomly deploy massive quantities of resource chests across the entire map. Survivors, expedite your search; these are the key resources for the coming deep winter.”
“Chest Tiers: Wooden, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond…”
“Special Rule: Gold–tier and higher chests will display real–time coordinates on the HUD. The highest current reward: Platinum Chest. (Coordinates will persist for a time even after being looted into an inventory).”
Real–time coordinate display?
Riley’s eyes widened slightly.
The system had a sick sense of humor, always setting up these “battle royale” scenarios. She remembered the Flame Wolf egg and the end of the forest instance—the system loved baiting players into crime.
But the wastes were different; chest spawns were pure RNG, meaning even a weak player might get lucky.
She leaped out of bed, ignoring her slippers, and rushed to the window to yank back the curtains.
Outside, the snow was lighter than yesterday, the sky a heavy, oppressive leaden
grey.
Riley toggled the HUD display, and a dense field of light–pings immediately appeared, though most were quite distant.
