Chapter 339 Strange Standoff
“Knock
Someone knocked on the door in a hurried rhythm.
Neeko heard the noise and rushed over to pull the door open.
Joseph and his nephew Rod stood outside. They were on morning patrol duty, snow dusted all over their clothes. Both men tightly gripped the Gust Light Crossbows Riley had given them.
“My Lord!” Joseph bowed respectfully the second he saw Riley step outside. His tone sounded urgent. “We were keeping watch from the watchtower on the fortress edge. There’s heavy movement across the giant rift. It looks like… people are fighting over there.
“Fighting?” Riley frowned and set down her coffee mug.
She wasted no time. She quickly adjusted her outfit on the equipment panel, grabbed the toast Neeko handed her, and headed straight outside.
go take a look.” “It’s fine, Joseph. Carry on with your work. Just tell everyone to stay alert. I’ll Riley slipped on her shoes at the doorway, a piece of toast sticking out of her mouth.
“Understood. We’ll head to the mine then,” Joseph replied before leaving with his nephew.
“Caw! Caw!”
Ash flapped its wings and soared into the sky above.
Riley made no attempt to stop it. Having a bird keeping watch from high up was perfect for this situation.
She left the camp alone. A faint glow appeared under her feet, and a snowboard materialized out of nowhere. She glided across the snow and quickly reached the giant rift nearby.
Riley came to a stop and stared across the rift.
A hint of confusion flashed across her eyes.
Outside Northwind’s Level 4 camp, countless makeshift ice barriers and wooden barricades had been built. Dozens of stone platforms had also been added along the camp’s stone outer wall.
Behind these defenses, at least twenty to thirty survivors crouched low in thick winter gear.

They held bows, crude muskets, and various odd magic scrolls, fully ready for battle.
“Is the Icefield Drifters Alliance pulling out every last trick they have?” Riley rubbed her chin.
Northwind was only the vice-leader of the alliance, and this was just his personal camp.
Now that WarWolf Guild knew his coordinates, normally, the Icefield Drifters Alliance would only send a handful of men. It was shocking to see them deploy such a large force to hold this line.
Under normal circumstances, any guild would abandon a single member who had provoked a powerful enemy. Players could teleport away, but campfires could not.
Meanwhile, on a snow hill roughly two hundred yards away from Northwind’s camp, stood two squads from WarWolf Guild.
There were over forty men in total, all wearing matching gray uniforms.
They built simple defenses on the spot and showed no rush to attack. Their entire demeanor was relaxed.
A few WarWolf mages hid behind the snow hill. From time to time, they casually tossed fireballs and ice shards toward Northwind’s camp. The flames hit the camp’s transparent shield, creating faint ripples that the campfire’s power quickly repaired.
Their attack style was lazy and half-hearted, just like workers clocking in to do the bare minimum.
“What is WarWolf even doing?” Riley could not wrap her head around it. “Are they waiting for reinforcements? If they really plan to raid this camp, everyone would arrive at the same time on snowboards. What exactly are they waiting for?”
Riley thought for a moment, then opened her system panel and started a voice call in their small trio group chat.
“Beep-”
“Morning, Burger! You eat yet? I just made double cheese bacon pancakes. Want me to send
one over?”
“I’m good, Tart. I already ate. I’m outside camp watching something interesting,” Riley said. “Watching what?” PineappleBeer cut in. “Did something happen to the neighboring camp?”
Riley simply described everything she saw through her binoculars.
