Milka hadn't even considered a trip.
Mars interjected, "She's coming back to the base with me. We're in the honeymoon phase. Why would you want to tag along and be a third wheel?"
"She finally gets to quit her job and she's not even going to travel?" Leah asked, sounding genuinely disappointed.
Milka quickly reassured her. "Mom, if you want to go on a trip, I have plenty of free time now. I can go with you."
"Why would I need you to accompany me? I have my own friends. I just saw you all by yourself and worried you'd want to travel but wouldn't have anyone to go with. Your friends from school are all busy working, getting married, or having babies—they don't have the time to join you. Mars has to report back to base, and your parents went back to theirs. I was worried you'd be lonely, so I wanted to keep you company."
Hearing the real reason, Milka felt a rush of emotion, wanting to laugh and cry at the same time. "Thank you, Mom."
"Oh, you sweet girl. You're far too soft-hearted. A couple of nice words and you're ready to cry. Milka, you can't be this easy to please. Otherwise, when Mars messes up, he'll just sweet-talk his way out of it and do it again. You need to toughen up. Don't let your emotions get the better of you. Stop crying now," Leah instructed, trying to teach her daughter-in-law how to be ruthless.
Hearing his own mother say this, Mars asked, "Mom, since you're so tough, tell us how Roberto managed to coax your iron heart back in the day?"
Leah puffed up with a hint of pride. "Me?"
Milka and Mars waited expectantly for her to continue.
"I'm not telling you, just in case you try to copy him." Leah rolled her eyes at her son, grabbed her scarf, and walked away.
After resigning, the first person Milka told wasn't her parents, but Anya.
That day, after Mars carried her box out of the office, the two of them waited downstairs for Anya for quite a while.
When the young girl finally got off work, she was already preparing to sprint to a restaurant to grab a table. "Milka, you're off work so early today."
