"Leo, but everyone else knows how to drive."
Leo replied, "The car everyone else drives, you can drive too."
"I don't know how."
Leo sighed. "...If you don't know how, we'll practice when we get home. You are not allowed to buy a car and secretly drive it, do you hear me? If you don't listen, I'll confiscate your allowance."
Anya gave a dejected "Oh." Leo quickly coaxed her, "Think about what you want for dinner. I'll come home early tonight and take you out."
After hanging up, Anya rested her face in her hands, looking depressed, her mind wandering who-knows-where.
Janice noticed the young girl zoning out again. Having spent a lot of time together, she had grown quite fond of the well-behaved, sensible, and occasionally hilarious Anya.
She knocked on Anya's desk. "Anya, what are you spacing out for?"
Anya looked up. "Janice, do you know how to drive?"
As soon as she asked, Anya realized she sounded silly again. Janice laughed. "I don't know how to drive. Whenever we go out, we take a cab."
Anya rested her face in her hands again. "I'm the only one who doesn't know how."
She used to have a companion in her aunt, who also couldn't drive. But out of nowhere, her aunt had a sudden change of heart, secretly learned to drive, and was now chauffeuring her uncle around.
Anya didn't pry, but seeing her boss—whose career was thriving while her personal life was a mess—Anya couldn't help but feel sorry for her.
The two of them had originally worked at the same company, met during a project, and got together. Later, because the company forbade office romances, Janice sacrificed her job, resigned, and started her own business.
Pressured by her family due to her age, she rushed into marriage with him just as her business started taking off. With both love and a successful career seemingly in hand, Janice planned to have a child once they made a bit more money. Then, she accidentally discovered his chat logs and hotel records with another woman.
Now Janice wanted a divorce, but the company was legally tied to the man. A standard divorce would require dividing their assets. Janice had built the company from scratch with her own blood, sweat, and tears; there was no way she was handing half of it over to him so he and his mistress could live an easy life. However, she had tried multiple times to gather evidence of his infidelity without success.
The man seemed to anticipate that Janice wanted a divorce and was looking for proof. Lately, not only had he been completely airtight with his tracks, but he was also secretly transferring assets, taking out loans on their property, maxing out Janice's credit cards, and accumulating various debts. His plan was clear: when the divorce happened, Janice would be left as the scapegoat with nothing but a mountain of his debt to repay. Under the law, both assets and debts would be split evenly between the spouses.
