After breakfast and getting Egan ready for the day, Genesis was waiting by the front door with her impatient son whining about how long it was taking for his father and uncles to get there.

She herself was irritated since they’d been waiting more than twenty minutes and waiting with a six-year-old who was excited to do something was never a fun time. However, she also knew the more Kiefer and Tadgh kept disappointing Egan, the easier it would be to convince him to leave when the time came. Let them keep fucking up. It was going to play out in her favor.

“Hey,” Jerren came down the steps two at a time holding a black backpack. “Kiefer and Tadgh will be right down. Kiefer asked me to give you this. He said you might be looking for it. It was shoved to the back of his closet.”

“Oh!” she immediately took the bag, dug through it, unzipped a pouch on the inside, and pulled out her little palm sized horse. “Look Egan. My horse.”

Egan’s eyes widened as he took it in his hands and then looked to his mom with incredulity. “It’s the same one, Mom! The exact

same.”

She smiled and ruffled his hair, “I think your grandpa was giving you a message to remind me I’m never alone and he’s

you.” She waved at the figurine, “you can keep it.”

“I can?” he was hopping from foot to foot excitedly.

“You sure can.”

“It’s so neat to hold something in my hand made by my grandpa. I can’t usually touch him or the things he makes. This is the best.”

“Is Kiefer going to be much longer?” she asked Jerren as she looked up the stairs.

“He is on the phone with his assistant from the company. There was an issue with a supply coming in from Europe. The ship is still at sea but was supposed to dock this morning. He’s trying to figure it out.”

“And Tadgh?”

“On the phone with his father.”

“They’re supposed to be with me and taking me out,” Egan said frowning. “Why are they doing all kinds of work things?”

“It’s part of being a grown-up,” Jerren shrugged,

“My mom is a grown up and she never tells me we’re going to do Something and then not do it.”

“Your mom doesn’t work.”

“Yes, she does!” Egan glowered now at Jerren.

“Sorry little man,” Jerren held his hands up defensively.

“Mom,” Egan was still glowering at Jerren, “tell him you work.”

“I work.” She gave Jerren a shrug but then Egan was yanking on her arm, and she sighed, “I have a degree from Columbus in cybersecurity. It was what I was doing in Burbank. I did a presentation on behalf of my employer.”

“You told the border patrol agent you were an editor.”

She lifted an eyebrow at Jerren. “What?”

“It came in late, after we caught up to you actually, but she remembered talking to you and you saying you were an editor. We have some agents at various border crossings. The report came in when we were already following you on the highway. You’re not an editor?”

“Cover story. I did a major in cybersecurity with a double minor in computer science and English literature. I did the minor in literature because I love reading and it was for my pleasure instead of for money.” She should have known they’d have someone at the border crossings though how they had one at

that specific crossing was confusing.

“Huge difference in cybersecurity and literature.”

“My foster parents always told me to make a career for financial security and to have something I could love as a hobby. I was smart enough to be able to do both. Kiefer knew what my degrees were.”

“My mom is smart, and she has a job.” Egan was still hanging on the perception of the insult from Jerren.

“Yes, she does.” Jerren gave a loud sigh and checked his watch.

“Mom, can’t we just go?” Egan looked longingly towards the door. “If my dad is too busy then we can go to the aquarium on

our own?”

“I don’t think so,” she looked hopefully at Jerren who shook his head. “Your father wants to be the one to take you, so we have to

wait.”

“This sucks,” Egan kicked his foot against the edge of the door.

“What sucks?” Tadgh’s voice called down the stairs as he took them the same way Jerren did, skipping every other one.

“I’m all ready to go and my dad said we could go a long time ago. and we’re still waiting,” his tone grated on Genesis’s es but6:56

where she normally would have corrected him for impatience, she ignored it.

Tadgh squatted in front of Egan and took his hands in his big ones and smiled at him, “I bet you’re really excited about the aquarium and spending time with your family. It’s really hard to be patient and wait but I know,” he squeezed his fingers gently, “your Dad will make it worth your while to be patient.”

“But it’s taking so long,” Egan grumbled.

“I know. What if while we’re waiting, we go outside and kick the football around?”
