“What are we doing?”

“Sneaking in the house,” Kiefer whispered as he pulled her through the back garden patio doors and led her towards the

theatre room.

“Why?”

“Because if they know we’re home already, they will crash

our date, and I want to watch Barbie alone with you.”

“You just don’t want anyone to know you’re watching Barbie.”

“That too,” he didn’t deny it as he ducked behind a wall at the

sound of voices coming from the front of the house.

She recognized Lorcan and Tadgh laughing with Jerren. She

considered calling out to them for no other reason than to fuck with Kiefer and she smiled wickedly at Kiefer as he gave

her a pleading look. She opened her mouth, and he turned her and pinned her against the wall his hand over her lips.

“Shh,” he warned her. “Do you really want Tadgh eating all

your fries?” He looked down to the paper bag in her hand1:28

“Jealous?”

“You have no fucking idea.” He pulled her through the hall

and down into the dark theatre, locking the door behind

them.

She giggled as she raced away from him and plunked herself into the sofa, clutching their bag of food to her

chest. She watched as he dug through a cabinet and pulled

an oversized throw blanket and tossed it at her, covering

her head. He plunked down beside her and grunted as he

opened an app on his phone.

“Can’t believe I’m about to pay for Barbie.”

“Me either,” she laughed with delight as he shot her an annoyed glance. She settled into the sofa, tugging the blanket up to her chin and opened the bag for the fries. Holding a few of them out to his mouth while he scrolled his

phone to pair to the screen, she yelped when he almost bit

her fingers. The way the corners of his lips pulled up while he chewed his fries had her shaking her head. “You did that on purpose.”

“Don’t know what you’re talking about.” He smirked before yanking her closer to him.

“Hey! Did I agree to cuddling? You ate my strawberry so no cuddling.”

“I’m watching Barbie. My manhood is at risk. You owe me the

cuddle.”

“Oh stop.” She rolled her eyes but then rested her head against his shoulder. “There are some sad moments, should we get you some tissues?”

As the movie started Kiefer gave a laugh, “Margot Robbie in

a swimsuit? If I need tissues, it won’t be for tears.”

“Oh!” she went to slap at him, and he grabbed her hands and kissed her knuckles. “I need my hand to eat fries.”

“I want my burger.” He eyed the bag.

She dug through the bag and then looked to him in sadness, 3/6

“we forgot the milkshakes in the car.”

“Shit.” He groaned and looked over his shoulder at the locked door. He looked over to the fridge in the corner, “would you settle for beer? If I go upstairs, they might catch me.” When she shook her head, “if Tadgh comes down here, he’s not watching Barbie. Dad will probably put something like Kill Bill on if you want girl power movies.”

“Oh,” she hopped off the sofa and went to the fridge, “fine, but you owe me another milkshake.”

“Deal.”

They settled in to watch the movie and Genesis didn’t fight against him when he draped his arm over her shoulder and cuddled her to his side. She rested her head against him and

watched the screen.

His fingers were lazily playing with her hair and massaging her scalp while the movie played. When Kiefer chuckled at a scene in the movie she smiled and snuggled in closer to him. She looked up to find him engrossed in the screen.

“I missed this, Gen,” he didn’t look away from the screen, but she felt the honesty in his words despite the lack of eye 4/6

“Me too,” she whispered biting her lip.

Keeping his eyes on the screen he turned his head a fraction and kissed her forehead. “Thank you.”

Her forehead burned from the fleeting touch of his lips and when he curled her tighter into him, she didn’t protest.

She should hate him. She did hate him. Yet, there was a part

of her, a big part, which still loved him and this, the feeling of

connection and being together with the father of her child,

felt right. While he focused on the movie, she couldn’t help

but observe everything about him. The way his chest rose

and fell when he laughed, the way his fingers stilled in her

hair when he didn’t like a scene and the way his head shook

when he found something absurd.

“You’re staring,” he called her out. “Watch the movie.”

“Are you really sorry?” the words blurted from her lips before. she could stop them.
