Chapter 189 Hannah’s Discovery
In Isabella’s view, the tutors the Wayne family had hired over the years were big names–no doubt qualified—but not one of them had ever gotten Noah to drop his defenses and really feel like trying didn’t carry so much weight. Not a single one.
He never really put in the effort to begin with, so no matter how skilled those tutors were, there wasn’t much they could do for him.
That was why, all this time, Noah hadn’t made any meaningful progress.
Well, not exactly zero progress—at least he hadn’t slipped back to elementary school basics.
Otherwise, even Isabella would’ve had a tough time getting him on track, and hoping for a decent midterm grade would’ve been pretty much out of the question.
When Isabella spoke up, Noah’s expression went stiff.
The earlier irritability and restlessness vanished in an instant, replaced by a dazed, almost guilty look.
“Um… I only finished a little,” he admitted.
For once, Noah wasn’t downplaying it at all. He felt completely numb.
He couldn’t wrap his head around why he seemed to be moving backward the more he studied.
Back before, he’d been getting around half of Isabella’s practice questions right.
This time, though… geez, he hadn’t even gotten through a third of them. It was downright embarrassing.
He swore he hadn’t slacked off at all these past couple days.
Ethan hadn’t even been able to find a reason to get on his case!
Every time Ethan came home, Noah was just hunched over his desk, grinding away.
He’d really tried–put in the effort!
But the problems just wouldn’t click.
Ugh.
He could still mostly understand what the questions were asking, but whenever he tried to work them out,
it was like some mental fog rolled in, keeping him from seeing the path forward clearly.
Noah sounded genuinely guilty, and even that stubborn cowlick of his seemed to droop.
He ran a hand through his messy hair, then reluctantly–almost hesitantly–pulled out his assignment
sheet.
If, before all this, someone had told Noah that one day he’d feel guilty about not finishing hou even feel anxious and kinda scared about not doing
Hind:
Like, how dare anyone make up something that ridiculous about him?
But now…
Well, he really had no confidence left.
Noah’s cowlick sagged along with the rest of his messy hair as he looked at Isabella with a totally defeated expression.
Isabella watched him, a faint trace of amusement in her eyes.
“Don’t beat yourself up over it,” she said.
“It’s completely normal that you couldn’t finish them all.
“Actually, getting about thirty percent right is pretty solid.”
Because Isabella had quietly adjusted the difficulty of Noah’s problem sets.
He couldn’t keep doing those mid–level questions forever. As Noah’s understanding improved and he filled in more of his knowledge gaps, Isabella had started slipping higher–difficulty problems into what looked like ordinary, medium–to–low level practice.
Same approach as before–making it feel like he almost grasped the concept but couldn’t quite lock in the key point, nudging him to dig deeper.
Managing to get thirty percent of this new batch right actually meant Noah’s difficulty level had gone up.
At this point, if Noah sat for the real exam, he would at least pull a D–but he had no clue he could even manage that.
To him, these questions didn’t look any different from the earlier ones.
If they’d looked obviously harder, he would’ve shrugged and given up right away. He knew his lunits.
But since they seemed like the kind he “almost” understood, he couldn’t help but push back against that mental block.
Truth was, Noah had a stubborn streak in him.
Back when Ethan used to call him out, even though Noah could never win their arguments, he’d still square up, chin held high, and keep going at it until he was completely worn out.
Anyway, their clashes only ever ended one of three ways–Noah ran out of steam. Ethan shut him down completely, or Ethan got an urgent call and just walked away.
There was no fourth option for stopping them.
