Arthur’s voice was low, deliberate.
He was protective of his wife, yes–but he understood what truly mattered, and he trusted Margaret fel
same.
If Eugene’s plan called for it–if letting Audrey use Margaret as leverage wasn’t an option—then they ne to be straight with her.
He’d stand by her side through it. No drama, no fuss.
Now that he was retired, time was one thing he had plenty of. He could be there for her, very step.
“Right.”
Eugene gave a slight nod, his tone steady but quiet. “With Uncle Darren and the others back now… they won’t just let things go.
“The minute they realize those overseas assets are out of reach, they’ll come after us.
“That’s where I’ll need you, Dad.”
Darren was still a Carter, after all–still had ties inside Carter Group. If he was set on making trouble for Eugene, he could stir up plenty.
That said, Eugene’s position had grown stronger by the day. His influence within the company was solid, and few were likely to side with Darren anymore.
Eugene had steered Carter Group through tough stretches, even pushed it to new heights–enough to win over a fair number of shareholders and partners.
If Darren and his crew wanted to make a move, there was really only one opening left to exploit.
And that was Carter Group’s upcoming launch of the Neural–Network Interface System.
Arthur had been thinking the same thing.
His voice remained low, thoughtful. “I haven’t asked until now–how confident are you about this launch?
“Several shareholders have reached out, pressing me to call it off. They say going head–to–head with Powell Group and Bexley Group is a risky move–that you should hold back.”
‘Arthur laid it out without pushing an opinion of his own.
He’d handed the company over to his son. Day to day, he stayed out of it.
Even with something this major, he wasn’t about to make the call for Eugene
Plain and simple–the kid was old enough to carve his own path.
If Arthur kept secund–guessing and stepping in. how would Eugene ever establish his own authority, his own vision, his own legacy?

After a pause, Eugene’s brow furrowed slightly. “We’re sure about this, Dad.
“There are details I can’t share before the launch.
“But trust me on this–what Carter Group is bringing to market will be a game–changer.
“All those press releases? They weren’t overhyping. They were right on the mark.
“Every claim they called ‘exaggerated–we can actually deliver.”

our mother and I will be waiting for the good news.”
He paused again, expression turning more cautious. “And… Isabella knows about all this, doesn’t she?
“The Powells are still her family. Have you talked with her? How does she feel?”
Arthur’s tone carried a hint of hesitation.
Sure, it’d be great if the Carters came out on top against the Powells.
But Isabella was still a Powell by birth–Arthur worried this might hurt her.
Then again, the Powells were the kind who needed to be taken down a notch. Otherwise they’d never treat Isabella right.
