After Astra finished writing down those experiences, it was as if the last drop of oil in a lamp had finally burned out. His head tilted to one side, and he collapsed unconsciously in my arms.
This time, he was truly asleep.
The night was deep. Outside the window, the wind of Liberty City still howled-but I didn’t dare close my eyes. I stayed exactly as I was, holding him without moving an inch. I even forced myself to breathe more lightly, terrified that this wasn’thing more than an overly beautiful dream. Afraid that if I shifted or blinked, the treasure I had lost and found again would dissolve into bubbles and vanish.
By the dim candlelight, I studied him carefully.
His leg. His left leg. Even in sleep, it remained bent at an unnatural angle.
Years of malnutrition had left his kneecap frighteningly prominent, connected to a withered, skeletal lower leg that made my heart clench just looking at it.
Three years ago, he was just five.
O
Back then, he was already a sturdy little wolf cub. He would even puff out his chest like a grown-up and declare that he would protect me.
But now, two years later, he hadn’t grown at all. If anything, he seemed to have shrunk. His whole body was so light it felt like a bundle of dry kindling.
Those cursed poisons hadn’t only ruined his voice. They had likely drained his very vitality.
Creak.
The door opened softly, just a crack, and Prince Adam stepped inside.
He made no sound at all, gliding to my side like a shadow.
“You still haven’t slept?” Prince Adam asked quietly when he saw the red veins filling my eyes.
“I don’t dare,” I said with a bitter tug at my lips, my fingers gently combing through Astra’s freshly washed hair. “Prince Adam, do you think … if I hadn’t brushed him off back then, if I had paid more attention to home…
“Stop blaming yourself, Cindy.” Prince Adam crouched glown and placed his broad hand over my icy one, steady and warm. “No one can foresee the future. All that matters now is that he’s alive. As long as he’s alive, there’s hope.”
Prince Adam looked at Astra’s sleeping face, his expression grave. “Everything has been arranged. We must return to the kingdom as soon as possible. I’ve sent an urgent message to Dr. Rupert and asked him to prepare antidotes and orthopedic equipment in advance. This child’s condition cannot wait. There may be more than one toxin in his body. The addictive drugs those bastards fed him are complicated. He needs a

thorough examination.”
I nodded, my eyes burning again.

“There’s more,” Prince Adam paused, a trace of reassurance in his voice. “In my name, I had the city lord send an urgent dispatch to my father. Along with reporting the situation here, I also had someone notify Baron Kazek’s estate.”
At the mention of Kazek Marrowell, I froze.
That was Astra’s maternal family, the household of my second sister-in-law.
Back when Silverpeak Pack was destroyed, my second sister-in-law died along with Steven.
When the tragic news reached the Marrowell family, the elderly baron and his wife couldn’t withstand the blow of losing their daughter, son-in-law, and only grandson all at once. Both their minds and bodies collapsed, and they lived in a constant haze.
Now, the family was headed by Astra’s uncle. I had heard that in recent years he rarely left the estate, and that the entire household was shrouded in despair.
“Astra is alive,” Prince Adam said heavily. “He is the only remaining male bloodline of Silverpeak Pack, and the Marrowell family’s sole hope. This news will be the greatest redemption, for the kingdom and for these two shattered families.”
